Was Jesus Ever Sick?

Prayer – Lord Jesus, being sick—with just a fever and a cold is the pits. Our bodies just get weak sometimes and those horrid, wretched viruses attack. They won this battle this time. Ugh. Were You ever sick? Please touch me and heal me...like Peter's mother-in-law!

When Jesus arrived at Peter's house, Peter's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him. That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said, "He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases." Matthew 8:14-17 NLT

Meditate. What is sickness?

Enjoy Spring!
Enjoy the sunshine and be healthy!

Jesus healed a lot of sick people. Jesus just touched the hand of Peter’s mother-in-law and the fever left her—she was well. Don’t we all wish that Jesus was still here on earth doing His miracles! I would have loved to have my fever and cough disappear that quickly this week! There is power in prayer—but the answer is not always immediate, like it was for Peter’s mother-in-law. Of course, if you saw the program The Chosen they depicted this lady being sick for more time before Jesus comes to her.

There are instances when Jesus heals people and tells them to stop sinning. It makes people question if sin causes disease. Here is an example of one healing where sin surely was involved in some regard.

Afterward Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days. Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the pool of Bethesda, with five covered porches. Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches. ... One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, "Would you like to get well?" "I can't, sir," the sick man said, "for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me." Jesus told him, "Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!" Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath, so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, "You can't work on the Sabbath! The law doesn't allow you to carry that sleeping mat!" ... But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, "Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you." Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him. John 5:1-3, 5-10, 14-15 NLT (Underlined for emphasis.)

Good lesson? Are our illnesses caused by sin? No. All mankind is under the influence of sin since Adam and Eve sinned by eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Our bodies just get sick—although some sickness can be caused by sin—but generally, I think or at least rationalize that the common cold is not from sin. How many times do we wash or sanitize our hands to cleanse us from germs? And we still get colds or flu. It is almost inevitable—although some people just never get sick! I’m not one of those.

Did Jesus get sick? He was sinless—so maybe He was never sick. We don’t have a record of Him having any illness in the Gospels. He did tell people to “go and sin no more” after He healed them. He was sinless. Each day we hope to be more like Jesus. Will that make our bodies as well as our spirits healthier? We can only hope!

Verse of Salvation ~ "No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind. Isaiah 58:6-8 NLT
