Are You Listening?

Prayer – O LORD my God, You teach me what is good for me and lead me along the path I should follow. Thank you, because I know I can trust You to show me where to go and when. I’m listening.

"Listen to me, O family of Jacob, Israel my chosen one! I alone am God, the First and the Last. It was my hand that laid the foundations of the earth, my right hand that spread out the heavens above. When I call out the stars, they all appear in order."

Have any of your idols ever told you this? Come, all of you, and listen: The LORD has chosen Cyrus as his ally. He will use him to put an end to the empire of Babylon and to destroy the Babylonian armies. "I have said it: I am calling Cyrus! I will send him on this errand and will help him succeed. Come closer, and listen to this. From the beginning I have told you plainly what would happen."

And now the Sovereign LORD and his Spirit have sent me with this message. This is what the LORD says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow. Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea." Isaiah 48:12-18

Meditate. Listen to God’s words. Find His Peace like a river.

Canoeing on the Ashley River
near Charleston, SC.
See the beauty of God's creation.

Has righteousness rolled over you? Peace like a river—or the sound of the ocean waves. Ah—such relaxing, pleasant sounds. I am always renewed and refreshed after spending even just a couple of hours at the beach or on a river. Even if it is a river that doesn’t make sounds…just gently flows along. That is truly my favorite place. Last summer I was challenged to go kayaking every day for a week…I was ready to go every day for a month! I love being on the water. Recently I got to canoe on the Ashley River near Charleston, SC—such a beautiful and peaceful place. Lots of birds calling—and so green. No gators or snakes in view…but others in the assured me they have seen there! That sort of muddles up the peace like a river feeling, but it was still a peaceful day taking in the beauty of God’s creation.

Isaiah was a prophet to the Israelites in Judah. He was filled with the Spirit of the Lord. Did you note that he asked the Israelites about their idols? Then he challenged the people to “listen.” Do you hear the same command, “listen?” Read again God’s directive: Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea. According to Paul, the Gentiles are offered the same salvation as the Israelites. Let God’s peace flow over you as you “listen” and respond to His words.

Verses of Salvation ~ And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they left with this final word from Paul: "The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet, 'Go and say to this people: When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend. For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes—so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.' (Isaiah 6:9-10). So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it." Acts 28:25-28
