Train Up A Child

Meditate. Consider how God wants you to parent your child.

True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life. Corrupt people walk a thorny, treacherous road; whoever values life will avoid it. Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. Proverbs 22:4-6

Since Mother's Day was yesterday thoughts of parenting are still lingering in our minds. How does God want you to parent the children He has entrusted into your care? In this scripture passage consider the words “direct your children onto the right path” which in other translations has been “train up your child in the way he should go.” God wants us and our children to be like His Son, Jesus Christ. Mary and her husband Joseph had an enormous responsibility to raise Jesus to be the Son of God. Jesus was truly obedient to His Father…all the way to the cross. Obedience is a trait that has to be instilled in a child at an early age or they are rebellious, self-centered, selfish and inconsiderate. As we look at Jesus throughout the Gospels we don’t see any of those traits. Oh sure, Jesus got angry at the people in the Temple who were selling animals and temple coins.

Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. He said to them, "The Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be called a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of thieves!" Matthew 21:12-13

Anger is an emotion that is likely to occur in all of us, but obedience is not an emotion rather it is a character quality that must be learned and honed. When a parent gets their child going down the right path…in this case, the path of obedience a wonderful thing occurs. The child will be obedient to the parents and to God as well. Teach your children well. If that child is the first of two or more children then it is more likely that the younger children will follow their sibling’s example and be obedient than if the first child is allowed to be rebellious and all others follow that example. It is possible though to have opposites in characteristics, but obedience is a character trait that God values. An example of an obedient person in the Old Testament was King Jotham, although not many kings were obedient to the Lord.

King Jotham became powerful because he was careful to live in obedience to the LORD his God. 2 Chronicles 27:6

Jesus was the ultimate example for us in obedience and because He died on the cross as a sacrifice for the sins of all mankind, God the Father raised Him from the dead. Without that resurrection our faith would be hopeless. Now we all have the hope of our own resurrection on day—to live with Jesus forever. In the meantime, we all must struggle with and hopefully choose to be obedient to God every day.
Consider how our shepherd is always there for us.
He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young. Isaiah 40:11
That helps me want to obey God day by day…hour by hour. It is a choice.  How’s that going for you?

Prayer ~ Father God, through Christ I have come to trust in You, God. And I have placed my faith and hope in You because You raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. From 1 Peter 1:21. I praise You…Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Verses of Salvation ~ Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people. Jude 1:3
