Teach Us

Meditate.
Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." Jesus said, "This is how you should pray: "Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. Give us each day the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And don't let us yield to temptation." Luke 11:1-4

“When you are sitting at the foot of the fountain, soak in that water.” Dr. Dade Moeller gave that advice in a graduation commencement speech many years ago. It was one of his life lessons. Jesus’ disciples wanted to soak in what He was doing…praying.

Teach us to pray. Listen up. There are many things that we need to learn in life. We gain the most when we have a formal lesson—specific, intentional teaching, not just information that is caught along the way. No matter how observant we are, we can benefit from a formal lesson. Teach us to pray. That is just what Jesus did. He gave the format for prayer.
            Honor God.
Honor His Plan of the Kingdom.
Request food. This should be both physically and spiritually nutritious.
We need to forgive others, and likewise be forgiven us for our sins.
Keep us pure—so we don’t give into temptation and the evil that goes on around us.
That is the design that Jesus gave us. We can embellish it, but it is a good simple starting point and covers the things that are important. Can you soak up some of Jesus' teachings and pray as He taught?

Prayer ~ Lord, You alone are Holy, help us to remember that as we focus on Your Kingdom. We don’t have to wait for our time in Heaven; Your Kingdom begins when we begin a relationship with You, by believing in You and Your power in our lives. Fill my heart and life with nourishment—the very manna like You provided to the Israelites in the desert. Forgive me for the thoughts, words and actions that were displeasing to You today…and, Lord, I do ask for forgiveness from those whom I have offended. Help me not be tempted by the things of this world—foods, fads, and fortunes. You alone are worthy of praise, honor and glory.

Verse of Salvation ~ May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation--the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.
