Consider this Scripture passage for your
Lenten devotion today.
As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said,
"This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But
the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah. What happened to him was a
sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of
Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God. The queen of Sheba
will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she
came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater
than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen. The people of Nineveh will also
stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they
repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than
Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent." Luke 11:29-32
Repent. Get rid of the prickles in your life. Bloom where you are planted. |
Repent. That was Jesus’ message when He
began His ministry. After He called some of His disciples, including Matthew,
He was invited to Matthew’s home for a banquet in His honor. The Pharisees there
were complaining to the disciples about Him eating with sinners.
Jesus answered them, "Healthy people
don't need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think
they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to
repent." Luke 5:31-32
Later on as Jesus was teaching thousands of
people gathered together He admonished those people to repent. Although it
seems that the blood of the slain Galileans was mixed with the blood of their
animal sacrifices in the Temple, that was not the problem. Sin in the hearts of
those listening to Jesus was the issue.
About this time Jesus was informed that
Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices
at the Temple. "Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all
the other people from Galilee?" Jesus asked. "Is that why they suffered?
Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn
to God." Luke 13:1-3
Just as Jesus challenged the people of His
time to repent, He is challenging us to examine our lives, repent and turn to
God. Where do you stand with the Lord?
Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, Just as people during
Your earthly life refused to listen and will be condemned for their sins, there
are people living today—this generation—who will also be condemned on Judgment
Day. I repent as I confess that I’ve been self-righteous and although I seek
Your wisdom, I am still prone to sinning. Change my heart, Lord, and make it
pure as You continue to sanctify me. Blessed be the Name of the Lord—creator of
Heaven and earth.
Happy Birthday, Lavina!
