Meditate on this verse:
But
his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and
night. Psalm 1:2
NASB
...in His law he meditates day and night.
Meditate.
After Moses died, God spoke directly to Joshua who was about to lead the Hebrew
people into the Promised Land.
"Be strong and courageous, for you are the one
who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I
would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the
instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the
right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study
this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will
be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and
succeed in all you do. This is my command--be strong and courageous! Do not be
afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:6-9
This Book of Instructions was the only “Bible”
written so far containing the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and
Deuteronomy. The Pentateuch was all written by Moses. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything
written in it. Obedience was the key to the right relationship with God…and
thus with men. Obey God and life will be good. Joshua must have been able to
read. I wonder how many of the Hebrew people were literate? They had a lot of
time out there in the desert for forty years, they should have all had time to
learn to read and to study the words that Moses had recorded from God. Did they
only have stone tablets? Carrying all that around would have been heavy weight.
It was likely they had all the stories, words of wisdom and commands memorized,
but God told Joshua to meditate on the written word, so we can assume that the
Law was written down by this time.
Meditate on God's Word Day and Night |
How long have
you had a Bible? I received my first Bible when I was in the seventh grade, so
that is well over fifty years ago. Since then I’ve had multiple copies and have
at least six copies here in my office right now, plus availability of on-line
Bibles, like the Blue Letter Bible,
right at my fingertips. I was so proud of myself for actually reading through
the Bible a couple of years ago—and I periodically read a portion of the Bible
on a scheduled reading plan like the one listed at the end of each of this Banquet With The King blog. But reading
the Bible through on a scheduled plan is not the same as meditating on God’s word. Meditating take a person much deeper into
knowing, experiencing, and then applying scripture to our lives. The only way,
or perhaps the best way, to really know God, to have a relationship with Him,
is to know His word—to study, memorize and meditate on His words. Like God commanded Joshua...Be Strong and Courageous. God's Word never
changes, but each time you read, even the same passage, God can bring new
meaning and relevance about Himself, history, and His plan for our lives. Try
reading the same passage on three different days, day and night. Try using three
different translations and see if it says the same thing to you each time. Pray
for understanding before you read His word. Can you apply His words to your
life? Day and night?
Prayer
~ Lord God, Open my eyes to see You more clearly and apply Your teachings to my
life. Especially help me to be ready all the time—and to encourage others to do
the same. Thank you that You have given me free will to choose to follow You. I
choose to do just that...and to love You with all my heart, mind, soul and
strength.
