Reverence to the Lord

The Ten Commandments ~
1.      You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. Exodus 20:7

2.      Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Exodus 20:8

How often have you heard someone swear by using the name of God or Jesus in a disrespectful way? Usually they are mad at something or someone and they take it out in a way that rudely casts a worthlessness on the very name of our Lord and Savior. It is like they are blaming God for their mishap—whether they stubbed their toe, pounded a nail crooked or bumped into someone’s car—whatever. They just don’t want to take responsibility for their actions…they angrily put the blame on God. But that is wrong. I’ve done it myself—that’s how I know that it is misplaced anger. I heard someone tell a young Christian one time to say “oh…popcorn” instead of swearing. It wasn’t much later I heard that young man yell “POPCORN” when he got a gutter ball while bowling! Everyone laughed—especially that bowler. He was pleased not to be swearing. He didn’t want to be disrespectful to His Lord God. Personally, I found that quoting a Bible verse helped me to overcome that urge to swear when I was frustrated. Here’s the one that was good for me.
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Deuteronomy 6:5 NASB

Another disrespectful action that we are all guilty of is observing the Sabbath day. First we have to establish “when” our Sabbath is. Is it Saturday? That is the day that God rested. Is it Sunday? That is the day of the Resurrection of Jesus—and it became the Sabbath for the early church. Which is it for us? Most people still work at least around their homes on both Saturday and Sunday. Remember that roar of lawn mowers on Saturday and Sunday during the summertime. In my part of the United States most businesses that serve people, like grocery stores, department stores, restaurants and gas stations, are open on Saturday and Sunday. When is their Sabbath? Does God still expect us to keep the Sabbath day holy? How do we do that?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus...give me wisdom that I would be respectful about what I think, say and do—especially when I am frustrated or angry. I don’t want to offend You by taking Your name in vain. I want to keep all Your Ten Commandments…including observing the Sabbath Day…so show me how I can honor You and keep the Sabbath holy.

Daily Bible Reading: Exodus 39-40

Memory Scripture of the Week –
You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected--even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. ...You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. ... Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you. You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. You must not covet your neighbor's house. You must not covet your neighbor's wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor. Exodus 20:3-5, 7-8, 12-17
