Fish in the Sea

Then God said, "Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind." Genesis 1:20

Memory Scripture of the Week –
Genesis 1:20  Then God said, "Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind."
Genesis 1:21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird--each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:22-23  Then God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day.
Genesis 1:24  Then God said, "Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals." And that is what happened.
Genesis 1:25  God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:26  Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground."
Genesis 1:27  So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Seattle Aquarium - Fishy Fish
Let the waters…the oceans…swarm with fish and other creatures. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.  One of my all-time favorite activities is snorkeling. I fell in love with the ocean in Okinawa and have been blessed to snorkel in Hawaii and the Caribbean, too—but not the Great Barrier Reef of Australia which is supposed to be the best in the world. The fish, sea turtles, starfish, anemones and all the colorful coral are just so breathtaking in those warm ocean waters. Well—actually when I snorkeled in the Caribbean it was after a hurricane that had decimated most of the coral. Although the fish were much larger, the water was murky and it wasn’t nearly as fun as Hawaii. I could live in the waters of Hawaii. The sea turtles are just amazing—swimming right up to you…when you are legally supposed to stay away from them! There is an astonishing variety of vibrant little fish literally swarming over the coral reefs. I could just float in the water and watch them all day.

Water attracts birds. Most likely because there are fish in that water for the birds to eat! Since we have a couple of large rivers—the Snake and the Columbia—right here practically in our backyard—there are lots of birds in our region. During the annual Christmas Day bird count locally there were over 40,000 birds spotted with 109 different species identified. That is a lot of birds for about 70 people to count in a 15 mile radius. We do have a lot of birds here. In the early spring I am always on the lookout for my first robin of the year. I saw it yesterday—and we are still in the middle of winter. Spring may come early this year since it has not been a very hard winter. While the Midwestern States were battling sub-zero weather we were just right above freezing most days in the last couple of weeks. It seemed cold—but nothing like the 25 below zero our friends and family were experiencing in Nebraska. Ugh. That is too cold for me.

God created wonderful fish and marvelous birds—some are even good to eat! Mostly they are just candy to the eyes.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus...Thank You for the amazing variety of fish and birds You created! Beautiful to look at…and I am grateful for the salmon and other fish that are good to eat. I praise You.
