Be Fruitful

Then God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day. Genesis 1:22-23

Memory Scripture of the Week –
Genesis 1:20  Then God said, "Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind."
Genesis 1:21  So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird--each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:22-23  Then God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day.
Genesis 1:24  Then God said, "Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind--livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals." And that is what happened.
Genesis 1:25  God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:26  Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground."
Genesis 1:27  So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God blessed them…the fish and the birds. He told them…be fruitful and multiply. With the food chain it would be necessary for the fish and the birds to be plentiful—so they can feed each other.

Be fruitful…God commanded the birds, fish and man to be fruitful and multiply. Looking ahead a few verses to where God created the beasts of the earth, He didn’t say that to the animals…but then there was plenty of food…in the form of plants for them to eat so maybe it wasn’t necessary. After the flood God told Noah and his family to be fruitful and multiply to repopulate the earth (Genesis 9).

When God renewed His covenant with the Hebrew nation through Jacob, who He renamed Israel, He also spoke of being fruitful.
Then God said, "I am El-Shaddai--'God Almighty.' Be fruitful and multiply. You will become a great nation, even many nations. Kings will be among your descendants! Genesis 35:11

When we consider being spiritually fruitful we think of the fruits of the spirit, as listed in Galatians 5.
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23

Also reflect on Jesus words…
I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. John 15:1-4
We cannot have spiritual growth… or those precious spiritual fruits if we are not seeking Jesus and living by His words. How are you doing with that?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus...I trust You with my life and I ask You to help me be intentionally obedient to You in all ways...even my very thoughts, words, and actions. May I be fruitful and my life bring You glory as I seek first Your Kingdom.
