To Whom Do You Listen?

Suppose there are prophets among you or those who dream dreams about the future, and they promise you signs or miracles, and the predicted signs or miracles occur. If they then say, 'Come, let us worship other gods'—gods you have not known before—do not listen to them. The LORD your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul. Deuteronomy 13:1-3

Don’t listen to other gods…don’t be enticed by strangers…by the unknown. Know the Lord our God—know His Word. In other words…READ YOUR BIBLE! (I’m writing this to myself…do you hear it, too?) Reading His Word is the best way to Know God…to learn about Him. People in the Bible who followed other gods usually got into trouble. Just look at how the Israelites didn’t purge the idol worshippers from the Promised Land like God instructed them to do…and they ended up fighting them continually for…forever, really.

So the Christmas tree and all the usual decorations, except for the Nativities, are all put away at my house. Christmas is over…well almost. Tomorrow, January 6th, is Epiphany or Three Kings Day, the commemoration of the day that the Magi visited Baby Jesus, thus revealing the Christ child to the non-Jewish people of the world. For the Magi this was a new king…a new God. I am glad that those Gentiles sought out the King of the Jews and followed that star to this new God—the true God of the Universe. They took the idea of this real God back to their home countries. The Nativities around my house depict those three Kings coming to meet the King of Kings. How will you and your family celebrate Epiphany? Are you ready to present your gifts to the Christ child? What will you give Him? A song in your heart? Pure heart-felt devotion?

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, guide my heart and the hearts of my family, friends and neighbors that we would be focused on the True God…Father, Son and Holy Spirit…and not misled by any false gods. Protect us from prophets or teachers that would deceive us—bamboozling us into thinking that we need other gods in our lives.
