Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the
LORD alone. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your
soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to
these commands that I am giving you today. Deuteronomy 6:4-6
This is one of my favorite verses. Jesus
quoted it when asked…what was the most important commandment? And you must love the LORD
your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your
strength. Mark 12:30. I’ve said it over and over to myself many times if I
started thinking about something that wasn’t exactly what I should be focusing
on. Great verse on which to meditate. Moses was telling the Israelites to
listen up…to pay attention to God’s commands. We need to do the same. Put God
and His commands first in our lives.
Moses continued in the following verses to
teach the Israelites about using God’s commands. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I
am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about
them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to
bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your
forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your
gates. Deuteronomy 6:6-9. When repeated again and again, that is a lot of “listening”
for everyone in the family. Do you focus on God’s Word as you drive about with
your family? How about when you put your children to bed for the night…or when
they get up in the morning? Do they see you doing a daily devotional…or
watching the morning news on TV? Are the Ten Commandments posted in your home…or
workplace? Are you committed to them? Can you…or your children…recite all ten?
Do you apply them to your life—in a wholehearted commitment?
Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, bring to my memory all
of the Ten Commandments and help me encourage others to likewise know,
understand and use those Ten Commandments on a daily basis.
