Is the Law Broken?

James lays it out straight. If you break one of the Ten Commandments, you’ve broken God’s law. You don’t have to break them all to be guilty. Read on…mercy is imperative. Mercy is shown compassion. It is essentially valuable because to receive mercy, we have to be merciful. Jesus taught something similar concerning forgiveness in His Sermon on the Mount. He was speaking to a large crowd as well as to His disciples.

If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:14-15 (Underlined for emphasis.)

Everyone is going to have to go through judgment. God will be merciful—according to James—if you’ve been merciful to others. If is such a qualifying word. IF. There is a choice to be made.

Treat others the way you want to be treated. The Golden Rule. The Bible is overflowing with wisdom and good advice. It is just the way that God wants us to live. The choice is up to each person. It is a personal thing. David wrote about that and it is recorded in Psalms, pleading for God to forgive him, and pledging to sing about that forgiveness.

Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. Psalm 51:14

Choices. Choices. Choices. What choice will you mercifully make today?

For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God's laws. For the same God who said, "You must not commit adultery," also said, "You must not murder." So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law. So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you. James 2:10-13

Prayer – Lord of mercy—please give me wisdom so that I may show mercy to others…and that God will be merciful to me.

Meditate. Consider God’s commandments.
