Don’t Just Listen…Do Something

A common understanding associated with the book of James is…Be doers of the word. Don’t just listen to the Sunday Sermon, sing along with the music, hear Christian teaching on the radio, and then sit back waiting for Christ’s return. Apply God’s word to your life. Obey it! Be doers of the word. Live it and share it. What is the point of knowing all about Christ and not allowing it to have some effect on your life?

James tells us that God will bless us if we obey God’s laws. Paul writes to the church at Rome that same message.

For merely listening to the law doesn't make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. Romans 2:13

The question is…do you want to be right with God? For all Christians, that should be a daily goal. Keep prayed up—your list short. Don’t forget what you heard. Live by the guidance that God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit have given us. The choice is up to each of us.

Just talk and no action.

But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don't obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
James 1:22-25

Prayer – Lord God, I see in black ink on white pages just what You expect of us—in the Ten Commandments and in the Sermon on the Mount. Help me. I want to obey…I want to be right with You. But sometimes I am weak and I’ll admit, lazy. Give me strength, conviction, and initiative to live up to Your standards—to find Your will and do it.

Meditate. Consider God’s guidance in scripture.

Verse of Salvation ~ While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God. Even though Jesus was God's Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. Hebrews 5:7-9
