What’s Next?

On the tenth day of the appointed month (Tishri) in early autumn, you must deny yourselves. Neither native-born Israelites nor foreigners living among you may do any kind of work. This is a permanent law for you. On that day offerings of purification will be made for you, and you will be purified in the LORD's presence from all your sins. It will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. This is a permanent law for you. ... This is a permanent law for you, to purify the people of Israel from their sins, making them right with the LORD once each year." Moses followed all these instructions exactly as the LORD had commanded him. Leviticus 16:29-31, 34

Meditate. Consider seeking God and coming close to Him during this holy day.

Yom Kippur begins and ends at Sunset.
Everywhere on October 1 -2

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year for the Jews. It is the Day of Atonement when people fast, pray, and seek forgiveness from God and others. This year it happens on October 1st-2nd, beginning at Sunset on Wednesday and ending at Sunset on Thursday. This is the tenth day of Tishri. No work is permitted on those days. They “get right” with God on this one day of the year. Can we do any less? We certainly can do more and get right with God daily! Our relationships with God and with others are what matter most in life.

A permanent law or statute. Can’t change it. God decreed it. That’s the way it is. Don’t work—just worship and honor God—atone for your sins for the year. That is what this Holy Day of Yom Kippur is all about—purification from sin. Note that it says “you will be purified in the LORD’s presence from all your sins.”  This isn’t something that people can do for themselves. The Lord God purifies us—He removes the sin. That is atonement. But we have to come to Him, admitting our mistakes and humbly seeking forgiveness. Prepare your heart daily—continually praying to the Lord. Paul wrote such advice to the church at Thessalonica.

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. Do not scoff at prophecies, but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of evil.                       1 Thessalonians 5:16-22

Pray continually and stay away from anything evil. Good advice then…and today. Are you seeking atonement? The Day of Atonement is next week. On that day offerings of purification will be made for you, and you will be purified in the LORD's presence from all your sins. An offering of purification will be offered for you. Your sins will be forgiven...just ask.

The shofar is sounded at the end of the final service in the synagogue on Yom Kippur, some say to represent the closing of heaven gates or the temple’s gates. It is significant of the reconciliation with God and with others that has taken place…or should have…in the last ten or more days.

This is only a few days off—so plan ahead. Consider who you need to forgive or haven’t spoken with for a while and reach out to them.  Do you feel that during this time of Yom Kippur you’re seeking repentance and renewal?

Prayer – Lord God, strengthen us to continually be in conversation with You that we would be in Your presence and in that we would stay away from evil. I praise You for Your plan for our lives that we can stand before You one day, holy and pure. Atoned of our sin.

Verse of Salvation ~ Come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

Yom Kippur is a time of fasting—so plan ahead.

Fasting Tips:

In order for your system to be geared up for a fast it is good to do a couple days of intermittent fasting—the 16 or 18-hour fast followed by eating two meals, easing into a time of fasting. Of course, the actual day of fasting on the Day of Atonement needs to focus on God, not waiting to eat your next meal. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught His followers about fasting, stressing that it should be a private thing—so don’t call attention to yourself.

And when you fast, don't make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. Matthew 6:16-18
