Wisdom in Proverbs—from Jesus?

How many times have you read from the Book of Proverbs and been amazed at the wisdom of Solomon?

Solomon's father, David, was devoted to the LORD.
Solomon wisely advised his son, and us, to tune your ears to wisdom and concentrate on understanding. Interestingly enough…to me anyway…a discussion considering the definitions and relationship of wisdom and understanding came up last week in a Bible Study I attend. According to the Lexicon associated with the Strongs #2451 in the Blue Letter Bible Interlinear search, there are lots of uses of wisdom from skill in war, administration and shrewdness. There is wisdom in religious affairs, ethics, and religion in general. It is used in good sense, skillfulness and as wise or witty cleverness. Understanding, #8394, indicates intelligence, insight and an object of knowledge. Knowledge, #1847, is discernment, understanding, and the wisdom of God.

I’ve always considered the wisdom to be knowledge and discernment applied to a situation. Knowledge is in the form of facts, information, and the condition of knowing about something. Why did Solomon ask God for wisdom? Look at 1 Kings 3:1-15? He was a young new ruler and he just wanted God to bless him so that he could serve God as well as his father, David, had. God spoke to Solomon in a dream.

That night the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, "What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!" Solomon replied, "You showed faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued your faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne. Now, O LORD my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn't know his way around. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?" The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, "Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! And I will also give you what you did not ask for--riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life! 1 Kings 3:5-13 (Underlined for emphasis.)

Wisdom is something for which we should ask God to give us, if we want to be wise…and to please the Lord. Jesus is the creator—as shown in the Book of Genesis, so even wisdom can come from Jesus. Additionally, Jesus told his disciples that whatever they ask for in His name, God would give them (see John 16:22-24.) Do you see Jesus providing wisdom to Solomon and others? Do you want more wisdom in your life? Trust Solomon’s words…knowledge and understanding come from the LORD’s mouth, who grants wisdom. Fear, or respect, the LORD and you will gain knowledge of God. What more could you want in life? God blessed Solomon with the wisdom he asked for, as well as riches and long life. I’d be content with just more wisdom!

Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:2-6

Prayer – Lord Jesus, grant me wisdom and understanding of Your word so that I may be a blessing to You by serving others.

Meditate on wisdom.

Verses of Salvation ~ Though the LORD is very great and lives in heaven, he will make Jerusalem his home of justice and righteousness. In that day he will be your sure foundation, providing a rich store of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD will be your treasure. Isaiah 33:5-6
