Light in the Old Testament

Jesus told us that He is the Light of the World.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."  John 8:12

I’ve had the cold virus that is going around and when I woke up early one day last week, I felt like I was about to faint—so I headed for the kitchen to get some water. It was dark in the house…but there were stars before my eyes and then whosh! I was down. I actually fainted—bumping my head on a kitchen chair. I’m OK, but I’m a bit leery of weakness and dizziness for now! There was light…and then there was darkness. I’ll take the light.

There are many references to light in the Old Testament that give hope and encouragement. Here are a couple, underlined for emphasis, that provided insight for the preincarnate seekers. Light is an important commodity—especially for those in any time before electricity. We can flip a switch…and there is light. For those who had to trim a wick and start a flame with some oil, light was powerful and precious. Jesus is the fountain of life, providing light for us. Did people during King David’s time know that their Savior was in their midst giving them light, understanding, protection, and hope?

For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see. Psalm 36:9

A psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? Psalm 27:1

Are you seeking the light and salvation? You don’t have to stumble around in the dark—turn on the light. Look to Jesus.

How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your river of delights. For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see. Pour out your unfailing love on those who love you; give justice to those with honest hearts. Psalm 36:7-10

Prayer – Lord Jesus, pour out Your unfailing love on those who love You; give justice to those with honest hearts. You provide light and love to all those who seek You. Thank You.

Meditate. Consider God’s love—unfailing love—in scripture.

Verse of Salvation ~ The LORD is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? Psalm 27:1
