Meditate. Think about God.
After all, is God the God of the Jews only? Isn't he also the God of the Gentiles? Of course he is. There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles. Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law. Romans 3:29-31
God is god…and
there is only one god. God made it clear in the Ten Commandments that he gave
to Moses, the Israelites and to us, too—that He wants to be worshipped alone—no
other gods, no idols. It doesn’t matter if the people are Jews or Gentiles. Ultimately,
in this monotheistic view of the world, there is only one God for all people.
You must not have any other god but me.
You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in
the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or
worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate
your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their
children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth
generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand
generations on those who love me and obey my commands. You must not misuse the
name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you
misuse his name. Exodus 20:3-7
Additionally,
God gave Moses what is known as the Shema for the Israelites to remind them
daily to love Him.
Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God,
the LORD alone. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all
your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly
to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to
your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the
road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your
hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts
of your house and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:4-9
My mezuzah. So be strong and courageous! ...He will neither fail you nor abandon you. Deuteronomy 31:6 |
Faith.
Believing in what we cannot see.
Faith is the confidence that what we
hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot
see. Hebrews 11:1
I have faith…faith in God…that He—Yahweh—is the one and only God. Other people may have ideas about other gods and believe in them. That is OK for them, but I know that my God is the god for me. The promises that He has made—I know that He will keep. My favorite promise is that He will never leave me or forsake me. It makes me feel loved and secure. In that love I know that I want to please Him…and that includes fulfilling God’s law that says to love God and to love your neighbor as yourself. That is simply what He wants everyone to do. Are you doing that?
