You have heard the law that says, 'A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce.' But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery. Matthew 5:31-32
Jesus was using scripture found in the Old Testament as given to Moses detailing how the Israelites were to live under God's laws and commands. Obedience was the key. This passage deals with divorce.
- When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife. And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife; Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. Deuteronomy 24:1-4
Divorce is still a common occurrence in society in most countries of the world today! According to studies on several websites (Goggle/Bing divorce rates for yourself) the divorce rate here in the United States NOT at the 50% level and rising as we all have been told for many years. It is declining. That should be encouraging to all married couples--especially those who have married for the first time after age 28, those with higher education, those with children and those who have a belief in God. Jesus told His followers right up front--a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery. Adultery is one of those big sins listed in the Ten Commandments...and in verses just prior to this in His Sermon on the Mount. Adultery's punishment was death by stoning.
- And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. Leviticus 20:10
Death by stoning or being sent to hell...either way adultery was a serious sin--an offense to God. Do you take your marriage vows..."until death do us part" seriously? I do. There have been times that both my humbly and I have wanted to "throw in the towel" but we'e stuck it out. Commitment--we've made it our goal. God has promised to never leave us or forsake us...and we have promised to never leave or forsake each other or God. It has worked for over 45 years.
Prayer ~ Lord Jesus...Help those who are struggling with problems that make them want to consider divorce as an option. Strengthen relationships--with communication, consideration and commitment.
Love for one another--put others first. Words by which to live.
- So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you." Deuteronomy 31:6
I will never leave you or forsake you--written in Hebrew.
