Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:9-13
In the traditional King James Version...
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV)
This has got to be one of Jesus' most important teachings. Books have been written about this prayer--but here are a few thoughts to consider. Jesus says...pray...talk to God the Father this way...
You are holy--that is pure--worthy of praise. He is telling His followers--and us--who have so much to learn...that the Heavenly Father is just that...heavenly---our spiritual Father. The book of Daniel mentions God's heavenly eternal Kingdom.
- After this time had passed, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven. My sanity returned, and I praised and worshiped the Most High and honored the one who lives forever. His rule is everlasting, and his kingdom is eternal. Daniel 4:34
- So remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The LORD is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other. Deuteronomy 4:39
Jesus taught over and over that the Kingdom of God...the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand as noted in Matthew 3:2; Matthew 7:21; Matthew 8:11; Matthew 13:33; Matthew 25:1; Revelation 11:15 and other places. God's Kingdom is on earth and in Heaven. That is amazing. As members of God's family we don't have to wait until we die to be part of God's Kingdom--it is ours here and now--forever. Additionally, Jesus tells us to "seek first the Kingdom of God" (Matthew 6:33). Jesus taught that we should ask God to help us not give in to temptation. Good point--I know that I need God's help for that---how about you?
