Immediately
after this, (the feeding
of 5,000 men, plus their families)
Jesus insisted that His disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other
side of the lake, while He sent the people home. After sending them home, He
went up into the hills by Himself to pray. Night fell while He was there alone.
Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind
had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o'clock in the
morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw Him
walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out,
"It's a ghost!"
But Jesus spoke to them at once. "Don't be
afraid," He said. "Take courage. I am here!"
Then Peter called to him, "Lord, if it's really you,
tell me to come to you, walking on the water."
"Yes, come," Jesus said.
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the
water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was
terrified and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he shouted. Jesus
immediately reached out and grabbed him.
"You have so little faith," Jesus said. "Why
did you doubt me?"
When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. Then
the disciples worshiped Him. "You really are the Son of God!" they
exclaimed. Matthew
14:22-33.
Sea of Galilee - Israel |
It took a miracle of Jesus walking on the
water for some of the disciples to believe. You really are the Son of God!
That day Jesus had fed 5,000
men, plus their families. He did that with prayer over a mere five little
loaves of bread and a couple of fish. That in itself is an amazing miracle. Would that have been enough to convince you that Jesus was the Son
of God?
After He sent the multitude of people home
He went up the hill to be alone with God and pray. What do you suppose He said
to God?
“Thanks,
Abba Father, for feeding all those hungry folks. I don’t think that some of
them would have made it home without eating. Did you see the look on the
disciples faces when they gathered up twelve baskets—yes, twelve baskets of
leftovers. They are a good helpers and devoted workers—but I just need some
time alone with You, now. I’ll go to them soon—out there on the Sea of Galilee.
They’ll need some more encouragement that I am who I AM. Wait ‘til they see me
walking on the water. You know who will get out of the boat and come to me. He
will be surprised—and so will the rest of the guys in the boat.” They went on
to talk together…God the Father and His Son. After a while it was time for
Jesus to go—to walk across the water and encourage His disciples. It was time
for them to declare…
You really are the Son of God!
Prayer
~ Jesus, I wish I could have seen Peter get out of that boat and come to You…and
the two of you walk together ON the Water! Awesome. Will there be a lake in
Heaven…and will You take us for a walk ON the water? I am so looking forward to
seeing You on Your throne—high and lifted up. For now, I love You and praise
You for Your mercy and grace in my life…and the lives of my family, friends and
neighbors. Thank you…that You reached out and took Peter’s hand. Like Peter,
help me not to doubt Your power and Your love.
