But
Jesus said, "You feed them."
"But
we have only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered. "Or
are you expecting us to go and buy enough food for this whole crowd?" For
there were about 5,000 men there.
Jesus
replied, "Tell them to sit down in groups of about fifty each."
So
the people all sat down. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up
toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, He kept
giving the bread and fish to the disciples so they could distribute it to the
people. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples
picked up twelve baskets of leftovers! Luke 9:10-17
Loaves and Fishes Mosaic |
Jesus journeyed through time and the
Promised Land on His way to the Cross. He sent His twelve disciples out to
surrounding villages to heal people and tell them about the Kingdom of God.
They returned (v. 10). Jesus was so popular that crowds of people followed Him—wanting
to have His healing touch. He was amazingly compassionate. On this occasion He
taught the crowd and healed the sick. As the disciples wanted to send them away
at the end of the day, Jesus turned five loaves of bread and two fish into
enough food for 5,000 men and their families. That is a lot of food and a great
miracle that is commonly known by even those who are not Bible studying
Christians. No one feeds that many people without drawing attention. What
impresses you most about this story?
That
Jesus actually welcomed the crowds?
That
Jesus continued to heal the multitudes of people?
That anyone still
had food?
That
Jesus used one boy’s lunch to feed 5,000 men and their families?
The
people ate as much as they wanted?
That
the disciples gathered up twelve
baskets of leftovers?
Should we be amazed at Jesus’ miracles? I
am in awe of Jesus, His miracles of healing and feeding the masses of people. With
promises like that, we have so much for which to look forward.
Prayer
~ Jesus, You are awesome. Feeding and healing so many. I ask that You would
continue to heal and provide for those who seek You here and now. You know and
love those in need.
