Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. John 17:1-3
After looking at "tolerance" for a couple of days do you feel any more accepting of others? Is this a trait that you find in yourselves or want to develop more in your children? I'm not sure that we really consider (or maybe I should say 'I consider') tolerance a positive trait. It seems derogatory in the American culture to "tolerate" someone or their behavior, yet Jesus seemed to easily do that. In this prayer that He prayed to our Heavenly Father during His last days on earth, He showed that He wanted eternal life for everyone--everyone who God the Father had given to Him. That is pretty accepting--everyone. Not everyone believes. Here Jesus is making an unusual statement, that eternal life is "knowing" God. Most people think of eternal life as "heaven" and that it doesn't begin until we die...but that is not what Jesus is teaching or praying. Listen closely to His message. Tolerate or accept that what you've always been taught isn't what Jesus was teaching. Listen closely. Listen and obey.
Teaching Tip - Once again model for your children qualities, like tolerance. Most of all let them see you reading, deeply studying God's Word, applying it to your life and praying. Your relationship with God is the most important--keep it strong and healthy and involve others--family and friends in that relationship. Maybe see it as a web--extending all throughout your life and theirs--interweaving. The next time you see a big spider web outside use it as an example for a discussion with your family about God and His plan for our lives.
Lord Jesus, You gave us an awesome message in this prayer to Your Father. Eternal life is knowing God the Father and You. Thank you for teaching us this--although it has been hidden away from many people. It is such a privilege to know You and to serve You.
