Go to the ant and
observe her ways…Prepares her food in the
summer and gathers her
provision in the harvest. (NASB)
Have you ever seen
an ant hill about three feet tall? Close by our family’s favorite camping place
near Chinook Pass in Washington State we have seen several of those ant hills
and they are fascinating to watch. The kids always want to put some food, like a
marshmallow, on top and see how long it takes the ants to devour it. We usually
follow the ants along their paths, like little highways, through the forest to
the spots they are gathering their food. Ants are truly amazing animals,
carrying huge chunks of their food back to the ant hill; they will even work in
pairs to transport their bounty. What a great example of diligent and hard
workers God has given us in the ant.
May is time to get
the garden planted---although we have a friend who is already harvesting his
first crop of lettuce! What a bounty he will likely harvest throughout the
coming months. Like the ant, he will probably be putting food away, frozen or
canned, in the fall for the winter months. Can we put away spiritual food?
Hiding God’s word in our hearts, memorizing scripture may be one way to gather
and store a spiritual feast. Eventually by memorizing scripture you may have a
chance to use that scripture to share God’s plan with someone who doesn’t know
Christ. Like it says in 1 Peter 3:15 “…sanctify (set apart) Christ as Lord in
your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope
that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.…” Always be ready, in springtime or at harvest,
to let others know where your hope comes from, and where it goes. To and from
God. Are you ready?
Lord,
help us to be like the ants: busy, busy, busy. Busy about doing your work.
