She (wisdom) is a tree of life to
those who take hold of her, and happy are all who hold her fast. (NASB)
The
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines wisdom as accumulated
philosophic or scientific learning; ability to discern inner qualities and
relationships; or good sense. Wisdom is one of those elusive
things—just when you think you’ve attained it you discover that there is so
much more to learn or understand. One of the wisest people I’ve known was a
very intelligent and gifted scientist, Dr. Dade W. Moeller, who was continually
seeking more knowledge about science and God. He was also one of the humblest
and happy people I’ve ever known. Through his work in the Public Health
Service, as a professor and assistant dean at Harvard University, and his
service on committees with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, National Council of Radiological Protection
and Measurements, International Commission of Radiological Protection, National
Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, he
became a world renown health physicist. One of his accomplishments includes
writing an environmental science textbook that is used in many universities
graduate programs. Before his death last year he completed the fourth edition
of that textbook. Dr. Moeller, a truly wise Christian leader with an abundance
of good sense, was an exemplary example for his family, friends, and coworkers.
He pointed every one he knew towards that tree of life encouraging them to seek
more knowledge for themselves.
The Tree
of Life is that tree that God planted in the midst of the Garden of Eden,
Genesis 2:9, and that is seen again in Revelation 2:7, where God allows the one
who overcomes to eat of the Tree of Life. What kind of fruit do you suppose
grows on the Tree of Life? Whatever, apple, pear, cherry or banana, I’m sure it
will be tasty and enlightening! That bite that will allow us to live forever in the presence of the
Lord. Maybe that fruit will be served at the banquet table when we are all
seated with Jesus. Will you be at that banquet table? Only if you repent,
become an overcomer, persevere and endure hardships. I hope to see you there.
Lord, help us to have wisdom to
seek and find that Tree of Life and to cling to it with all our might.
