Jesus
said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and
he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” (v. 35) (NASB)
The idea of never thirsting
is wonderful. How many times have you been really thirsty? I know that I have
felt parched---really thirsty many times, but never had to go without water for
more than a few hours. Growing up weeding in the bean fields on our farm during
hot summer days was really thirsty work. I recall my mouth being so dry and the
water tasting so good. We had good well water and we would partially bury the
water jug in the ditch bank to keep it cooler on hot day as we weeded the
beans. Mom worked alongside us kids encouraging us that in just a few more
minutes and we’d be done with our row and we could have a drink of water.
Ah---that cool fresh water. It was like a gift from Heaven on those long hot
days.
No hunger, no
thirst. Jesus was speaking here to the multitude that He had just fed with the
five barley loaves and two fish. Now there was the possibility of another
banquet since the disciples gathered up twelve baskets of leftovers. Jesus
spoke to them about the true bread of heaven that God the Father was giving
them. Himself. If they believed in Him, they would have eternal life. Just as
He explained to the Samaritan woman at the well, John 4:14, there will be
plenty of living water flowing to give eternal life. With that we can assume
that there will be no thirsting at the banquet in heaven.
Lord,
thank you that we will never hunger or thirst if we believe in you.
