Another Good Day for God

Prayer – Lord Jesus...Thank you for giving us choices as to whether it is a good day…or not. I choose to have a good day—like You did after You created the sun, moon and stars. Good job!

God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day. Genesis 1:17-19 NLT

Meditate. Think about “good.”

Another evening and morning passed—and God counted the fourth day. It was another good day for God. He had several of those…and probably years of good days until mankind turned his back on our Creator.

I’m sure you have good days, not so good days, and totally rotten days. That’s how I classify mine. Generally, I have good days—but with kidney stones and dreary skies some of my days lately have not been in the “good” category. I know…life is what you make it and I can choose to be happy. If I’m “happy,” is it good day? Today, I just feel like a little more sleep…some extra rest and I’ll regain my strength and vigor. God told the Hebrew people to rest…like He did on the seventh day of creation. And then we have some wise advice in Proverbs about being lazy and sleeping too much.

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber. Proverbs 6:6-11

That is definitely convicting for me. I’d rather be like a wise ant…not a lazybones! I choose to be happy and productive…for the rest of today anyway! What is your choice today? Are you choosing to call this a good day...and allowing God to guide you along the way to please Him?

Verse of Salvation ~ Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. Philippians 2:12-13 NLT

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

God made Adam and Eve and gave them perfect food…in a perfect garden—with beautiful lights in the sky.

Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground." So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground." Then God said, "Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground--everything that has life." And that is what happened. - Genesis 1:26-30 NLT

Edible nasturtium blossom.
Add to a salad--nibble and enjoy!

And that is what happened. God gave them seed-bearing plants. Nearly every plant—flowers and edible plants have seeds with which they reproduce. What is your favorite edible seed-bearing plant? Wheat? Rice? Tomatoes? Lettuce? How about Nasturtiums or lilacs? They have edible flowers.

It is time to plan and get ready to plant your garden. This year I plan to include some edible flowers like nasturtiums. I recall the first time I saw them in a salad, I thought they were just a garnish. Then someone reassured me that they were actually edible. Yum. The leaves and flowers have a sort of a peppery flavor similar to watercress. In researching their use I was very pleased to discover that the seeds can be made into capers. That will be a fun thing to try later in the summer.

For now…it is planning time…and time to get that soil ready. Where I live here in the Columbia Basin we can still expect freaky spring frosts, so it is best to wait until mid-May before actually planting seeds outdoors. They can be started indoors now and transplanted in May. Below is a list of a few favorites with edible flowers that can be easily grown including some that we think of as herbs. Google and research for yourself a few edible flowers and pick up some seeds at your local nursery, hardware, big box home improvement store or on-line mail-order nursery. Let me know what you think as they grow and you use them to add some flavor and color to your salads and other dishes.
