God Promised to Live Among the Israelites…and Never Leave Them

Temple Model in Jerusalem
Then the LORD gave this message to Solomon: "Concerning this Temple you are building, if you keep all my decrees and regulations and obey all my commands, I will fulfill through you the promise I made to your father, David. I will live among the Israelites and will never abandon my people Israel." So Solomon finished building the Temple. 1 Kings 6:11-14

What a wonderful promise that God made to David and to Solomon. He would live with them—the people of Israel—but not just with them but among them. I can imagine God walking and talking alongside the Israelites in His Temple in an intimate relationship with the promise that He would never abandon them. I think that is what God desired from His chosen people—to have a relationship with each of them like He had with Adam and Eve before their fall. There are expectations associated with a relationship. God told Solomon that he needed to follow all God’s decrees and regulations and obey all His commands. Solomon thought he could live up to God’s expectations, so he finished building the Temple. At that point in his life he was obedient to God and his commandments.

Are people today much like Solomon—wanting to obey God’s commandments? Are you like Solomon?

Prayer ~ Lord, help me be obedient to You and to Your commandments.
