Bread of Life

Jesus told them, "This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent." They answered, "Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do? After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, 'Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, Moses didn't give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now He offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." "Sir," they said, "Give us that bread every day." Jesus replied, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But you haven't believed in me even though you have seen me. However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them. For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those He has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day." John 6:29-39

Give us this day our daily bread…Matthew  6:11. Jesus is the Bread of Life…spiritual bread that provides eternal life.

Jesus goes on to explain that He is the Bread of Life.

"I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh." John 6:48-51 NASB

During His last supper with His disciples Jesus gave thanks and shared part of that Passover Meal in a way that we now commemorate as the ordinance of Communion.

And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood." Luke 22:19-20 NASB

Jesus body…the broken bread…given for us. He was the sacrificial lamb of the Passover. Sacrificed for our sins. His body and blood shed for us provided the opportunity for eternal life. He is the Bread of Life that we would never be spiritually hungry again. His promise that He will never reject them—never reject us—is such a comforting, loving promise. Jesus loved us so much that He gave His life for us. What more can we do than simply believe in Him? Give us this day our daily bread.

Prayer ~ Jesus, Thank You. You are the Bread of Life for me—and I praise You.
