As for you, Titus, promote the kind of
living that reflects wholesome teaching. Teach the older men to exercise
self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have sound
faith and be filled with love and patience. Titus 2:1-2
Paul was such a good teacher. In this scripture
passage he is instructing a preacher and evangelist named Titus on how he
should be teaching the men…and women…there in Crete. People everywhere
selfishly want to run their own lives…to do what they want to do. So self-control
is an issue for many people and it is one that we must yield to the Lord. When
we are filled with the Holy Spirit we can have self-control as a product of the
Spirit’s control of our lives. Then we will think clearly about spiritual
things.
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of
fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these
things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires
of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Galatians
5:22-24
So think clearly and exercise self-control.
Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ
is revealed to the world. 1 Peter 1:13 NLT
Be encouraged that as we follow God’s
wisdom and yield to His love in our lives—we will gain self-control over the
evil forces that want to influence us.
Prayer
~ Lord Jesus, may Your love flow through us, giving us Your strength and wisdom
and guiding our choices that we would have self-control and bring You glory in
all that we think, say and do.
