Promise with a Rainbow Covenant

"Yes, I am confirming my covenant with you. Never again will floodwaters kill all living creatures; never again will a flood destroy the earth." Then God said, "I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth." Then God said to Noah, "Yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth." Genesis 9:11-17

What does a rainbow look like from above? Does God see the same rainbow that we see here on earth? When we were flying back from the big island of Hawaii in March 2011, I looked down and saw a rainbow beneath us. It was awesome to be above the rainbow…like in the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” way up high. I’ve searched high and low, but I don’t seem to have a photo of that rainbow—just take my word for it…it was beautiful. Vivid colors. To me rainbows are a reminder of God’s promise—just as He intended. What do rainbows signify to you…to your family and friends? Have you ever asked them?

This was an important covenant that God made with mankind…and all earthly creatures. No flood to wipe everyone and everything out again. God’s greatest love…to keep these wretched creatures that He made in spite of their evil ways. He’s promised not to wipe us out. The end times are coming and everyone will have to face up to the errors of their ways—to be responsible for their own actions. Does everyone realize that? No matter when we live, it matter HOW we chose to live. Choice is important. God made His choice…His promise. We need to consider what our choice is and by that what we are promising to do. What is on your list today?

Prayer ~ Lord God, Thank You for Your beautiful rainbows and the promise that You won’t destroy us with a world-wide flood. I haven’t seen a rainbow when it snows…does that happen? But it is amazing to see the glistening snowflakes shining in the sunlight and even drops of water clinging to leaves and trees reflecting dazzling tiny prisms of rainbows—reminding me of Your promise and Your creative glory. You are amazing.

The Sweet Aroma of a Promise

The Sweet Aroma of a Promise
And the LORD was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to Himself, "I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things." Genesis 8:21

Pleasing aroma of sacrifice to the Lord. God likes a pleasant smell wafting up to Him in Heaven.
Let the whole world bless our God and loudly sing His praises. Our lives are in His hands, and He keeps our feet from stumbling. ... Now I come to your Temple with burnt offerings to fulfill the vows I made to you—yes, the sacred vows that I made when I was in deep trouble. That is why I am sacrificing burnt offerings to you—the best of my rams as a pleasing aroma, and a sacrifice of bulls and male goats. Psalm 66:8-9, 13-15.
Noah offered a sacrifice. A sacrifice of Thanksgiving that God had spared their lives. God responded with I will—His promise that He would never again destroy all living things. So far…so good. Mankind seems to have gone into a downward spiral right back to the corrupt and evil level of mankind at Noah’s time. How much time do we have left? Mankind deserves judgment and it will happen. No sacrifice to God with the intent of seeking forgiveness or offering thanksgiving. No sweet aroma. God has promised—and most of mankind has turned their back on God. Where do you stand with the Lord?

Prayer ~ Lord God, thank you for saving Noah, his family and all those wonderful animals. May we live a life filled with love, following the Your example, Christ, because You loved us and offered Yourself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. Ephesians 5:2.

Forty Days and Forty Nights

Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created. Genesis 7:4

Seven days. A lot can happen in seven days…creation of the world…celebration of the Festival of Shelters, Festival of Passover, length of quarantine for a person healed from leprosy, ceremonial uncleanness, number of days the Israelites marched around Jericho, as well as the number of days between Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday. Seven is important. Likewise, forty is significant. Twice Moses was up on Mount Sinai for forty days with God, receiving God’s directions for living…based on His Ten Commandments and direction on building the Tabernacle (Exodus 24-25). Before the Israelites went into the Promised Land Moses sent a group of men to spy out the territory for forty days (Numbers 13:25). Goliath taunted the Israelite army for forty days (1 Samuel 17:16). Elijah took forty days to travel to Mount Sinai when he ran for his life from Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kings 19:9). Jonah fasted for forty days and nights when he went to Nineveh after being in the belly of the giant fish for three days (Jonah 3). Jesus fasted for forty days and nights in the desert when He was tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:2, Mark 1:13, Luke 4:2). There were 40 days between the crucifixion and ascension of Christ (Acts 1:3).

Rainclouds gathering around the Netherlands Noah's Ark
Rain for forty days and forty nights to wipe out everything on earth…except Noah, his family, and a bunch of animals. There were numerous animals—two of each plus seven of each of the clean animals. Rain. Did Noah even understand what rain was when God said it will rain for forty day and forty nights? It had never rained on earth before that time—but that is exactly what happened. The rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights. Genesis 7:12. God kept His promise. Only Noah, his family and the ark full of animals were spared. Everything else on earth was destroyed as the water covered the earth.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I’m sorry that people became so bad, so wicked and evil that You had to destroy them. As I look around the earth now, I see the evil of Noah’s time raging through cities and towns everywhere. No regard or respect for You. What is happening? May You see more Noahs and have mercy as You prepare to set things right in the world again. That day is coming. Show us Your promise again.

Promise Unfulfilled

And the LORD said, "I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them." Genesis 6:7

I am sorry. God said…I will, but He didn’t. He didn’t wipe out all the people and animals. He saw that Noah was good—so He saved him and his family in the ark. A well-known story—all around the world. The family in the great ship along with all the animals. Movies have even been made about that fateful trip. God is merciful.
Noah's Ark built in the Netherlands

God expects perfection. His creation was initially perfect. With each day of creation…God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25. He expects perfection. When mankind was hopeless and wicked beyond belief, God wanted to destroy everyone and everything until He looked down and saw the goodness in His servant Noah. A willing worker to build a huge ark. Imagine how his neighbors laughed at him…until it started to rain. Do you think that they were clambering at the door to get in as the waters rose? God shed a tear…and the earth was covered with water. To me that is how huge God is—His tear of sadness over the vileness of His creation created the flood. Noah was good…but poor choices along the way have led to a world that is as shameful now as it was in Noah’s day. Will God keep His promise? We can trust Him. Stayed tuned for the rest of the story about Noah and his family.

Prayer ~ Lord God, You were sorry that You created mankind before You saw the goodness in Noah. May You find that same goodness in those who love You around the world today. No ark is needed—since Jesus has provided for our salvation.

Promise of Punishment

The LORD replied, "No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him. Genesis 4:15

Cain killed his brother Abel, motivated by jealousy since God accepted Abel sacrifice of a lamb, but not Cain’s grain sacrifice. What was Cain to do? He should have known better than to strike Abel with such a maddening blow that it ended his life. Look at what happened…

When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. Abel also brought a gift—the best of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, but He did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. "Why are you so angry?" the LORD asked Cain. "Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master." One day Cain suggested to his brother, "Let's go out into the fields." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him. Afterward the LORD asked Cain, "Where is your brother? Where is Abel?" "I don't know," Cain responded. "Am I my brother's guardian?" But the LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground!" Genesis 4:3-10.

Sheep in Israel
Cain brought a gift to God of some of his crop while Abel brought the best of the firstborn lambs. The Lord accepted Abel’s gift, but not Cain’s gift. Dejected…discouraged…disheartened. Cain really wanted to please the Lord, but he wasn’t intentional about finding out just what would please Him. Should he have raised a few lambs himself so that he could give the best of his flock to God? Could he have traded some of his grain for a pure, blemish free lamb from his brother Abel’s flock? Did Cain have options? Jealously murdering his brother doesn’t seem like a very wise option. God wasn’t pleased, but He didn’t want anyone to kill Cain, so He put a mark on him. Punishment was promised to anyone who tried to take Cain’s life.
Vengeance is the Lord’s.

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. Romans 12:19 NASB

We don’t know what God had taught this first family about sacrifice or sin, but Able knew to give his best to the Lord. What do we give to the Lord? The first of our income, the first in our time…our thoughts? The best…or what we have left over?

Prayer ~ Lord God, open my eyes to see what I give sacrificially to You is the best I have to give.

I Will – God’s Promise

Then the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live. And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel." Then he said to the woman, "I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you." And to the man he said, "Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it. It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains. By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return." Genesis 3:14-19

I will…that was God’s promise. Adam and Eve disobeyed and God declared their punishment…and the punishment for that cursed snake. He warned them…at least He warned Adam not to eat of the tree in the middle of the Garden. Yum. That fruit tasted good to Eve after the wiley snake enticed her to eat it. She shared it with Adam, who was right there with her. Why didn’t he stop her? The great question of the ages. He knew what God had said, yet he too must have been duped by the snake. He didn’t reach out and take that fruit from Eve before she took a bite. Then it was all over—so Adam ate some, too. God had to declare His judgement, His punishment, His promise. I will…. If God had not followed through with His chastisement of the snake, Eve and Adam, then He would have been a weak and powerless God. He is omnipotent. He knows everything. He knew before He even made the world that He would have to send His Son as a sacrifice for the sin of mankind. That antagonism that existed between Satan and Christ is what we read about in verse 15… And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.

So we live with the result of God’s promise to Adam and Eve. We still have thorns and thistles growing in our gardens and fields that cause workers exhausting efforts. There are plenty of tumbleweeds here in the Columbia Basin to attest to that. Gardening is a challenge. Farmers have retaliated against the weeds with herbicides that may compromise the integrity of the food they produce. Would Adam have done that? Childbirth is still painful. Ask any woman who has given birth in the last forty years about that. It is a pain that happens—more intense and longer for some than others…but it is the same agony that Eve—and Mary—experienced. Even modern medical practices and cesarean procedures don’t remove the pain of Eve’s curse.

Interpretation of the passage from that event at the tree about the enmity between the serpent and the woman—and their offspring—deals with the promise that Jesus was to be the sacrifice for mankind.  That is a promise we can hang onto. Satan bruised Jesus’ heal and Jesus wounded Satan—on the cross.  God had a plan and it was fulfilled. The best promise for all—exhausting work or pain don’t matter in comparison to the sacrificial gift of God—giving up His own Son for our eternal inheritance.

God had a plan. It was fulfilled…and continues in eternity.

Prayer ~ For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16. That began with Adam and Eve and God's love continues now and into eternity. What a great promise.

Promise of A Helper

Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him." Genesis 2:18

God created a helper for Adam when He created Eve. “I will” He said and He did it. God saw the need for a companion for man. Paul, writing in First Corinthians, points out that woman was made for man…not man for woman. For the first man didn't come from woman, but the first woman came from man. And man was not made for woman, but woman was made for man. 1 Corinthians 11:8-9.

As we wander through life we may find that we feel alone sometimes…even when we are in a room full of people. How can that be? It may just be our own choice to isolate ourselves…but there is something that makes us feel complete. I’ve met many people throughout my life that I felt like I already knew. It seems to me that it was the Holy Spirit in them recognizing the Holy Spirit in me that created that bond. The lonely feeling’s gone. That must be how Adam felt—that absence of loneliness. Can you imagine the joy that he must have felt? Someone with whom he could continuously communicate—someone to share meals, stories and the joys of living in The Garden. Someone that he could impart the knowledge that God had given him.

Prayer ~ Lord God, Thank You that You promised a helper for Adam. Your design and the creation of the helpmate, the companion for Adam…and for each of us…is wonderful. Provide helpmates or companions for those who are feeling lonely so they don’t have to be alone, unless they choose solitude. You have promised to be with us, and with the Holy Spirit within us we never have to feel abandoned. Guide us in all we think, say and do that we would live in a way that honors You as our creator.

Under His Wings

He will cover you with His feathers. He will shelter you with His wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91:4.

I love this…that we don’t know what God looks like, but possibly, He has wing. Ah.

Jesus spoke of the hen gathering her chicks…O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me. Matthew 23:37.  Jesus saw Himself like the hen—with wings and feathers—offering protection. Protection like the promises that are mentioned in Psalm 91. That “sheltering” under His wings is such security—knowing that the most powerful being ever—God Himself—is proving protection. This Psalm describes God as our refuge and place of safety. It goes on to say that the protection God provides is over our health and safety, too…IF we make the Lord our refuge. Do you seek protection with Him?

Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. ... If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For He will order His angels to protect you wherever you go. Psalm 91:5-7, 9-11.

I feel secure knowing that my God cares about me…and wants to protect me—and my family, friends and neighbors.

Prayer ~ Thank You, Lord God, for drawing us to Your side and covering us with Your wings. We feel secure knowing that You love us enough to care for and about us and all that happens in our lives. Even though Job suffered, You cared about him. Likewise, if we should suffer…we know that in spite of pain and disappointment, You do care about and love us. For that we give You praise.

God’s Promises are Pure

The LORD's promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over. Psalm 12:6

When silver is mined it is combined with other metals like copper and gold. It is not in a pure state so silver has to go through a process to become pure. God treats His chosen ones in much the same way. We have to be pure to one day stand before the throne of God. Only the holy can enter into His presence.

Listen to me, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and born into the family of Judah. Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and call on the God of Israel. You don't keep your promises, even though you call yourself the holy city and talk about depending on the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD of Heaven's Armies. Long ago I told you what was going to happen. Then suddenly I took action, and all my predictions came true. For I know how stubborn and obstinate you are. Your necks are as unbending as iron. Your heads are as hard as bronze. That is why I told you what would happen; I told you beforehand what I was going to do. Then you could never say, 'My idols did it. My wooden image and metal god commanded it to happen!' You have heard my predictions and seen them fulfilled, but you refuse to admit it. Now I will tell you new things, secrets you have not yet heard. They are brand new, not things from the past. So you cannot say, 'We knew that all the time!' Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new, things you never heard of before. For I know so well what traitors you are. You have been rebels from birth. Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name, I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out. I have refined you, but not as silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering. I will rescue you for my sake—yes, for my own sake! I will not let my reputation be tarnished, and I will not share my glory with idols! Listen to me, O family of Jacob, Israel my chosen one! I alone am God, the First and the Last. Isaiah 48:1-12.

Zechariah wrote about the end times and the fate of the Israelites. Some of them will be refined—just like silver.

Two-thirds of the people in the land will be cut off and die," says the LORD. "But one-third will be left in the land. I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'These are my people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.'" Zechariah 13:8-9.

We must be pure…

Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the LORD tests the heart. Proverbs 17:3.

As God's partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God's kindness and then ignore it. For God says, "At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you. “Indeed, the "right time" is now. Today is the day of salvation. ... We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us, and by our sincere love. 2 Corinthians 6:1-2, 6.

You must be holy because I, the LORD, am holy. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own. Leviticus 20:26.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure. Ephesians 1:3-5.

Even as children of God…we must be holy and pure. It’s all about our choices. Choices we make before our holy and pure God. The God whose promises are pure. Look for His promises in His Word.

Prayer ~ Lord God, show us Your promises and help us to live pure and holy lives that are acceptable toYou.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

As usual every Friday is Feast Day—Feasting at the King’s Table. We can’t live on just spiritual food …nor can we live on bread alone. We’ve got to have some meat, veggies and fruit. How those are seasoned makes a big difference. Herbs and Spices are the keys to tasty foods. This week I’m sharing an old chart that I’ve tucked in my spice cupboard for years that shows which herbs to use with particular foods. It’s been very helpful to me. Enjoy!
