How
do you view eternity? Eternity—without beginning or ending. Never ending.
Everlasting. That’s the promise God gives us. God sees all of time…but as
Solomon reminds us, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from
beginning to end.
In
the beginning, God created us to be like Him…spiritual beings which live
forever—so this assumes that our “eternity” begins when we are born.
Then God said, "Let us make
human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the
sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth,
and the small animals that scurry along the ground." Genesis 1:26
The
prophet Ezra, in the Old Testament, was given a message by God to the
Israelites.
A Heart of Stone
Give me a new heart and spirit!
For I will gather you up from all
the nations and bring you home again to your land. "Then I will sprinkle
clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and
you will no longer worship idols. And I will give you a new heart, and I
will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart
and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so
that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations. Ezekiel 36:24-27 (Underlined for
emphasis.)
It is
exciting to see that this prophecy of the Israelites coming home to their
Promised Land from nations all around the world.
Jesus
spoke a Samaritan woman who came to draw water from a well. He revealed that He
was the Messiah and that God is spirit…
But the time is coming—indeed it's
here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.
The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is
Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth."
John 4:23-24 (Emphasis
mine.)
Jesus
explained to Nicodemus that we must be spiritually born…or reborn.
Jesus replied, "I assure you,
no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.
Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to
spiritual life. John
3:5-6
Spiritual
life. That is part of everyone—but those filled with the Holy Spirit are the
ones who will be spending eternity with God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Where will you be for eternity?
God
has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in
the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's
work from beginning to end. So I concluded there is nothing better than to be
happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink
and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God. Ecclesiastes 3:9-13 (Emphasis mine.)
Prayer
– Lord Jesus, thank you that You have pursued me, call me Your own, and filled
me with Your Holy Spirit. I worship You in spirit and in truth, because You are
the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father without You. Thank
you for revealing that truth to me. Help me to share this truth with others
this week…and frequently until I step across into the spiritual realm.
Meditate.
Where will you spend eternity?
Verse
of Salvation ~ Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the
days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:6
