Jesus as Redeemer

Have you been redeemed from something? Redeemed means to ransom, purchase, or save from bondage. We don’t have the custom of a kinsman or family redeemer in the United States. It seems that it was a Jewish custom created by God to provide for poor and needy landowners. For a description of this according to God’s guidance see Leviticus 25:23-55. Redeeming the land, a childless widow, or perhaps a person in slavery was usually done by a close family member as we see occurring in the Old Testament. Jesus is our redeemer. We see a picture of this in the relationship that Ruth has with Boaz who becomes her family redeemer when she moves to Bethlehem with her widowed mother-in-law Naomi. She works in Boaz fields gleaning barley and is guided to her family redeemer by Naomi. God blessed that family through the birth of Obed who became the grandfather of King David. Throughout his life, David recognized the LORD as his redeemer.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

The Sacrificial Lamb - our Redeemer.

Jesus redeemed the world by being the sacrificial lamb—dying on the cross. He redeemed mankind from the initial sin that Adam and Eve rebelliously committed…and the sin with which we all live. Do you acknowledge Jesus as your redeemer?

After Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he lay down at the far end of the pile of grain and went to sleep. Then Ruth came quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. Around midnight Boaz suddenly woke up and turned over. He was surprised to find a woman lying at his feet! "Who are you?" he asked. "I am your servant Ruth," she replied. "Spread the corner of your covering over me, for you are my family redeemer." Ruth 3:7-9

Then the women of the town said to Naomi, "Praise the LORD, who has now provided a redeemer for your family! May this child be famous in Israel." Ruth 4:14

Prayer – Lord, You are my Lord, my Savior, and my Redeemer. I serve a risen Savior—I serve You.

Meditate. Consider God’s word. Listen to and hear what He is saying.

Verse of Salvation ~ When righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things, they will die for it. Yes, they will die because of their sinful deeds. And if wicked people turn from their wickedness, obey the law, and do what is just and right, they will save their lives. They will live because they thought it over and decided to turn from their sins. Such people will not die. - Ezekiel 18:26-28
