Sing a new song to the LORD! Let the
whole earth sing to the Lord! Psalm 96:1
He has given me a new song to sing, a
hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They
will put their trust in the LORD. Psalm
40:3
Then I saw a Lamb that looked as if it
had been slaughtered, but it was now standing between the throne and the four
living beings and among the twenty-four elders. He had seven horns and seven
eyes, which represent the sevenfold Spirit of God that is sent out into
every part of the earth. He stepped forward and took the scroll from the
right hand of the one sitting on the throne. And when he took the scroll, the
four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each
one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the
prayers of God's people. And they sang a new song with these words:
"You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For
you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every
tribe and language and people and nation. And you have caused them to
become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth." Revelation
5:6-10
A Scroll in a Jewish Synagogue in Israel. Sing a New Song...from that scroll. |
Recently when I was reading in the book
of Psalms I was struck by the repeated phrase, "Sing a New Song"
or "a new song" to sing. There are more than these listed
above, including a "new song" in Old Testament books of Isaiah.
Sing a new song to
the LORD! Sing his praises from the ends of the earth! Sing, all you who sail
the seas, all you who live in distant coast lands. Isaiah
42:10
Music is an important part of the
Jewish tradition—both in the synagogues and in the homes at holiday
celebrations. We are told in a couple of the Gospels that Jesus and His
disciples sang a song…a hymn that was likely Psalm 115-118 that is
traditionally sung after the Passover Meal.
Then
they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Mark
14:26
What will a "new song" sound
like? The passage from Revelation tells us that the four living beings and the
twenty-four elders will sing a "new song" in heaven to and about the
Lamb of God—Jesus Christ—our Lord and Messiah. He is worthy—He has paid the
price of salvation for every person in the world—no matter what their
nationality. That would include all Jews and Gentiles. This "new
song" declares Jesus worthy—Worthy is the Lamb. What a picture that
creates...a precious, innocent fluffy white lamb—pure and spotless—sacrificed for
the sins of mankind. Crimson red blood spilled onto that pure white wool.
Sacrificial blood shed for the remission of sin. We are reminded of this during
the sacrament of Communion—Jesus Christ's blood shed for you—for the remission
of your sins. Worthy is the Lamb.
What song is conjured up in your mind?
Have you accepted that Christ's blood was indeed shed for you—for your sin?
Sing a new song.
Prayer
~ Thank You Lord for creating music…and encouraging us to sing a new song.

Friday’s
Feast at the King’s Table
As usual every Friday is Feast Day—Feasting at the King’s Table. We can’t
live on just spiritual food …nor can we live on bread alone. We’ve got to have
some meat, veggies and fruit.
And that meat shouldn’t be a burnt
offering. Maybe God likes burnt offerings…but burnt food is not healthy and not
enjoyed by most people…including my husband. Watch the temperature. Heating
cookware to too high of a heat is not good for the pans. It can release
dangerous chemicals from Teflon and can even warp cast iron pans. Oil in frying
pans can also catch fire quickly. Ask my niece Michelle about that. As a
teenager her home caught on fire when she was cooking French fries in oil on
the stove and left the stove unattended to answer the phone. Safety first. I
blame my “burnt offerings” on my range top. It has a couple of burners that are
superhot…even on low. What is your excuse?
