As recorded
in Mark 12:1-9 Jesus told a parable about a vineyard owner when He was speaking
to a crowd at the Temple that including a group of Pharisees. After that
parable He said…
Didn't
you ever read this in the Scriptures? 'The stone that the builders rejected has
now become the cornerstone. This is the LORD's doing, and it is wonderful to
see.' The religious leaders wanted to arrest Jesus because they realized he was
telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they were
afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away. Mark 12:10-12
Arch at a gate in the Old City Wall of Jerusalem. The center stone is the Cornerstone. |
The stone that the builders rejected has now become
the cornerstone…from Psalm
118:22. The cornerstone is the most important stone in the building…especially
the one in an archway. It holds that arch together. Without it, the arch falls
in…and all the building stones above it. Literally the building will fall down.
The Pharisees were rejecting Jesus…and He was the most important part of God’s
plan for mankind…for our redemption and salvation. Peter uses this same
illustration in Acts 4:11 and 1 Peter 2:7.

For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures,
where it says, 'The stone that you builders rejected has now become the
cornerstone.' Acts 4:11

You are coming to Christ, who is the living
cornerstone of God's temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by
God for great honor. And you are living stones that God is building into his
spiritual temple. What's more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation
of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. As the
Scriptures say, "I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen
for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced."
Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who
reject him, "The stone that the builders rejected has now become the
cornerstone." And, "He is the stone that makes people stumble,
the rock that makes them fall. They stumble because they do not obey God's
word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. " 1 Peter 2:4-8
Do you see
Jesus as the cornerstone of your
life? Or is He a stumbling block for you? The choice is yours. You choose how
to allow Jesus to be part of your life. I pray that you will choose to let Him
be Lord of your life…the chief cornerstone. He can hold your life together
giving it strength and support. He lets you choose how the temple of your life
is built…with or without Him. Is your choice with Him in a strategic position
as a cornerstone…or just another block in the wall? How will you choose? Or will
you reject Him as the Pharisee did?
Prayer
~ Dear Jesus, I choose to have You be the cornerstone of my life. You are more
important to me than anything else—than anyone else. You are more important to
me than family, home, church, friends, savings, material possessions…than life
itself. I so look forward to the day that You return and take Your church home
with You. You are the cornerstone of that very church…that group of people that
are Your followers. Thank You for revealing this truth to me…and for allowing
me to put You first in my life.
