The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding
countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had
happened. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been
possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and
perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. Then those who had seen what happened
told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. And the crowd began
pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone. As Jesus was getting into
the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. But Jesus
said, "No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has
done for you and how merciful he has been." So the man started off to
visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus
had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.
Mark 5:14-20
Whose afraid of a little pig? |
The crowds There
they are again surrounding Jesus. This time a group of Gentiles saw the results
of His ministry. There was a demon-possessed man who was raising havoc in their
cemetery was now he was healed—free from the control of the demons and in his
right mind. The demons had gone into some pigs…and the pigs jumped into the Sea
of Galilee and drowned. The people were afraid. Afraid of what? Not the
demons—they were gone. Not the pigs--they were drowned. Not the man—he was sane. Afraid of the power of Jesus?
He wouldn’t harm them—but they asked Him to go away—so He headed for His
boat…where His disciples were waiting for Him. That previously possessed man
wanted to tag along with Jesus…but Jesus told him to go home and tell them
about the mercy he had received. The Ten Cities, or Decapolis, was a region
south east of the Sea of Galilee where Greek Gentiles lived. This man could be
considered the first missionary to that area. He went “home” and told them the
good news of the mercy of the Lord—the great things that Jesus had done for
him. Just to see him in his right mind was probably testimony enough to amaze
many people.
Amazing love
that Jesus had…for Gentiles and for Jews. There doesn’t appear to be any
correlation with this story in the Old Testament. There were demons…and people apparently
sacrificed their children to these demon “gods” but no instances of demon
possession or demon control and the subsequent healings that would have
occurred had Jesus been present.
Like that
young man…can you tell others about the great things that Jesus has done in
your life? Things that come to my mind are…definite attitude changes, control
over food cravings, quick recovery and healing from colds and shoulder surgery.
Mercy and grace in relationships. Yes…God is good and shows me more of His
grace and mercy than I could ever deserve. Do you feel that same love and
appreciation for and from the Lord in your life? If not…seek Him and you will
find Him…and that love that He wants to give and receive.
Prayer
~ Lord God—I do seek You and know that I will find You since You promised that if I search for You with all my heart...I will find
You . Jeremiah 29:13 NASB. Please
continue to reveal Yourself to me…and show me how You see me…and others through
Your eyes. May I proclaim Your grace and mercy…like that demon-possessed men
You healed.
