Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of
Tyre. He didn't want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he
couldn't keep it a secret. Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell
at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evil spirit, and she begged
him to cast out the demon from her daughter. Since she was a Gentile, born in
Syrian Phoenicia, Jesus told her, "First I should feed the children--my
own family, the Jews. It isn't right to take food from the children and throw
it to the dogs." She replied, "That's true, Lord, but even the dogs
under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children's plates."
"Good answer!" he said. "Now go home, for the demon has left
your daughter." And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying
quietly in bed, and the demon was gone. Mark 7:24-30
Faith...like the Morning Glory. Fresh each day...a Promise. As seen near Jerusalem, Israel. |
Good
answer! That is what Jesus said to that
Gentile woman. She was from Syria. What do you think would be the interaction or
relationship her relationship to Jesus if she were living today? If she were a
believer—a follower of Jesus—she would be experiencing immense persecution. I’m
sure either way as a mother she would be seeking a cure…a healing…for her
daughter. She would continue to ask and plead with Jesus to help her
daughter—to remove the demon. Jesus recognized the repeated request…and
although she was not a Jew, He honored her faith and gave her the desire of her
heart—freedom from demonic possession. How scary that must have been both her
and her daughter, as well as other family members, friends and neighbors. Because
of her faith—there was freedom. Faith in Jesus’ power is the key to healing, to
salvation. That salvation isn’t just for the Jews—but pray that more will have
faith in Jesus as their Messiah.
Faith
is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us
assurance about things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days
of old earned a good reputation. - Hebrews 11:1-2
There are
numerable examples of faith in Old Testament scripture passages about people
devoted to God. One story that comes to mind is the faith inside and outside
the walls of Jericho.
Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will
actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Through
their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. Hebrews 11:1-2.
It was by faith that the people of Israel marched
around Jericho for seven days, and the walls came crashing down. It was by
faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city
who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies. Hebrews 11:30-31
Faith unseen.
The Gentile woman didn’t have to have her daughter come to see Jesus—He could
heal her from a distance. Do we have such faith as her? How do we get more
faith? Just ask God.
Prayer
~ Thank You, Lord, for Your acceptance of the Gentile Woman’s faith. Faith in
You…in Your power to heal her daughter. I am humble before You…as I seek Your
face and wait patiently for Your presence to be revealed more and more each day.
I have faith in You…please continue to make my faith grow…and spread to others.
