But
many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns
ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them. Jesus saw the huge crowd
as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were
like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. Late in
the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place,
and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the
nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat." But Jesus said,
"You feed them." "With what?" they asked. "We'd have
to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!"
"How much bread do you have?" he asked. "Go and find out."
They came back and reported, "We have five loaves of bread and two
fish." Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups
on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred. Jesus
took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them.
Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the
disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish
for everyone to share. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the
disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. A total of 5,000
men and their families were fed from those loaves Mark 6:33-44

You feed them. Can you imagine five thousand men—plus their wives and children—all seated
on a grassy hillside. And the disciples coming around to give them supper…some
bread and fish. This may have been more than some of them had eaten in a long
time…days, but…they ate as much as they
wanted. No one went away hungry. Amazing. And there were twelve baskets of
food left over---one for each of the disciples. What do you think they thought
of this? Jesus had just sent them--two by two—out and about the countryside—Healing the sick, raising the dead, curing
those with leprosy, and casting out demons (Matthew 10:8). Now Jesus had
just fed 5,000 men and their families. And no one was hungry…no children
whining—please give me something to eat. No. Everyone, men, women and children,
were satisfied. No one left sick or hungry. Jesus had compassion on them.
Spiritually they were fed also as we can note that Jesus spent time teaching them.
Jesus literally and figuratively gave them their daily bread. He will do no
less for us. Just ask.
Prayer
~ Lord, give us this day our bread. Fill the stomachs of those who are hungry.
Give us guidance from Your word today that we would see our world as You see
it. Guard our tongues that we wouldn’t have to eat our words—but that those
words would be pleasing to You and encouraging to those around us.

Friday’s
Feast at the King’s Table
Watch what
foods you put into your mouth…across that tongue that can say bitter or sweet
things. Do you think with the bread and the fish people may have made little
fish sandwiches? Maybe Fish Tacos? Wrong country…but similar tastes.
