The path of life leads upward for the wise;
they leave the grave behind. Proverbs 15:24
What wise advice. I’ve known people who
idolize their dead relatives—spending exorbitant amounts of money on cemetery
plots, elaborate caskets, fancy headstones and flowers. Then they spend hours
of their time visiting the cemetery—some people of other faiths even share
meals with the dead on a regular basis. When we lived in Okinawa, there were
Okinawans who would bring food daily…or with some families on a weekly basis,
to their ancestors’ grave site. Such devotion. It was like having a family
picnic with half of the family in a burial tomb. Seemed weird to us. We might
take flowers to our families’ graves—but not food. Leave the grave behind. Even
Jesus had advice about the death and burial… He said to another person, "Come,
follow me." The man agreed, but he said, "Lord, first let me return
home and bury my father." But Jesus told him, "Let the spiritually
dead bury their own dead! Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of
God." Luke 9:59-60.
Be wise. Follow Jesus’ path of life. Seek
first His Kingdom.
Prayer
~ Lord Jesus—Thank You again for Your obedience in going to the cross—carrying my
sin and grief—along with the weight of the world’s sin. What a burden—a heaviness—to
endure. So that I may walk along Your way with wisdom I once again ask...Search
me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out
anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting
life. Psalm 139:23-24.
