Loving Others

For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for Him and how you have shown your love to Him by caring for other believers, as you still do. Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God's promises because of their faith and endurance. Hebrews 6:10-12  

Love God…love others. God knows your heart and remembers what you do for Him. A lot of people just need “Jesus with skin on.” They need a hug…from God…from a person. We all know that God loves us—even my two-year old granddaughter can sing “Jesus Loves Me.” She folds her hands and requests that we all pray before we begin a meal…if someone hasn’t already initiated that action. Being around little Jesus seekers keeps us spiritually on our toes—we won’t become dull as long as we are challenged by them. But what if you don’t have others challenging you? Are you going to become spiritually dull and indifferent? Have you lost your desire to go to church, Bible study or to do any activities with other Christians? There is a danger in that.

Will you let it wash you clean?

Encourage others?

…Let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. Hebrews 10:19-25 NASB.

Encourage one another—that is a form of showing love to others. If you care about them…you will encourage them. How are you doing with that?

Prayer ~ Lord God, let us love one another—for love is from You…and everyone who loves is born of You and knows You. In our thoughts, words and actions may we show that we love our neighbor as ourselves…just as You taught us to live. Thank You.

Self-Control

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God's promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 2 Peter 1:5-7

Self-control is such an important element of our personality—of our very soul. I grew up learning to have and nurturing a bad temper. I always blamed it on my Irish heritage. It has only been through the Lord that I have gained some control over my temper and my tongue. Knowledge of the Lord—and submitting to Him has allowed control of my tongue which I’ve discovered is an integral part of self-control.

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. Behold how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father; and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. James 3:5-10 NASB.

What is inside of a person is what flows out of them. What is inside of you? Love, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control? Or is it hatred, bitterness, envy, idolatry, or just self-centeredness? When you are bumped, upset or inconvenienced, whatever is inside of you will come out. If your life is has the moral excellence that Peter wrote about in our scripture today if and you have self-control that is gifted to you by God, then you’ll be able to react in a way that is pleasing to Him. What a blessing self-control is! It boosts your self-esteem and helps you to be a better witness for God. Trust the Lord to give you self-control—over your thoughts, words and actions. I know He can help you…He helped me.

Prayer ~ Lord, give us this day our bread. Guard our tongues that we wouldn’t have to eat our words—but that those words would be pleasing to You and encouraging to those around us.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

Watch what foods you put into your mouth…across that tongue that can say bitter or sweet things. Studies have shown that the tongue has about a three week memory, so if can eliminate a particular food from your diet for three week, you can break the habit. Can you imagine no sugar for three weeks? I’ve found that sugar is just a poison to my body—but it is also very hard to give it up. Would that mean giving up chocolate? Chocolate without sugar just isn’t tasty—or is it? Even the very best cacao needs some sweetness to balance the bitterness of the cacao. Cacao and thus chocolate are heart healthy and have important antioxidants for cancer prevention. Here’s a recipe for Chocolate Mousse I’ve modified from The Cancer Survivor’s Guide.

Chocolate Mousse

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips or 8 ounces of 70-80% cacao chocolate bar, broken up

1 cup nondairy milk

24 ounces of silken tofu

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1 banana, chopped, optional

Strawberries, blueberries or raspberries and mint leaves to garnish

In a microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate in the milk for about 1 minute. Stir and let sit for an additional two minutes. Pour into a food processor or blender. Add the tofu, vanilla extract, and banana, if desired. Blend until smooth. Pour into dessert goblets or bowls. Chill for a couple of hours. Serve with sliced fruit and mint leaves as desired. This will make up to 10 servings—depending on your self-control over the portion sizes. Refrigerate leftovers.

What Do You Want?

May the Lord answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May He send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.

May He remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings.

May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.

We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.

May the Lord grant all your requests. Psalm 20:1-5 NIV

Have you been reading along with the Daily Bible Reading schedule? Today’s scripture includes Psalm 20 and verse 4 is a favorite of mine… May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.

What is the desire of your heart? Many times David was in distress and the Lord answered his prayer—so he is telling us to do the same. What sacrifices are you—or have you made? Of course David lived at a time when animal sacrifices were still being done—but even when David sinned against God in his adultery with Bathsheba (see 2 Samuel 11-12) he only admitted his guilt to God through the prophet, Nathan. He didn’t offer a burnt offering sacrifice, but the death of his son was the punishment. David prayed Psalm 51.

Be gracious to me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Thy compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin….

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Thy presence, and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Thy ways, and sinners will be converted to Thee….

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou will not despise. Psalm 51:1-2, 10-13, 17.

Is your sacrifice a repentant and contrite heart? 

For you to seek the desire of your heart, you must have a plan, purpose, a desire, something that you want. Do you have a plan? One of my favorite sayings is: You don’t plan to fail…You fail to plan. Plans are essential to accomplish anything in life. As our lives go by increasingly faster each year it is good to know where we are going. What is it you want to do in the next five years, in the next year, in the next month…tomorrow? Is spiritual growth high on your priorities list? What are you going to do to reach that goal?

Prayer ~ Lord, guide our thoughts, hearts, and minds that we would set and intentionally strive for  spiritual goals. We want to live lives pleasing to You—and we recognize that we have to not only have that desire—but be ready to put it into action serving You.

Precious Gentle Spirit

You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. 1 Peter 3:4

Gentleness is described in the Strong’s definition as humble, mildness of disposition or meekness. Jesus was an example to us, showing a humble and gentle heart.

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29

With meekness people rely on God rather than their own strength or their own selfish desires. That word “rely” is the key—not imposing their own will, but allowing the Spirit of God to work in and guide their life. Trusting God.

That “spirit” of the “gentle spirit” is the life-giving spirit, the actual the breath of God—pneuma. God breathed into Adam that “breath” allowing his very soul to become alive. He became a living being.

Precious – the Greek word, polytelēs, meaning excellent or of surpassing value. With a quiet spirit, we are of great value to our God. That makes me feel special and loved in God’s eyes. Adopted by God and loved—when I yield to Him and receive a gentle and quiet spirit. What a great motivation that provides me to want to quietly please God. (See Romans 8:23 for a reference to adoption by God.) Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to fill you with His fruit—including a precious gentle spirit?

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22

Prayer ~ Fill my heart and life, Lord, with the fruit of Your Holy Spirit—that all I think, say and do would be pleasing to You…and would draw others to You—giving You glory and honor.

Promise of a Life of Goodness

For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17

A life of goodness.

If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up. Romans 14:18-19

Serve God—serve Christ—with an attitude of goodness, peace and joy. The Holy Spirit gifts us with that as we love and serve the Lord. It doesn’t matter what we eat—as long as we are living in service to the Lord. Paul went on to say that we need to aim…to try…to live in harmony. Try. Trying can be frustrating, unless we turn it over to the Lord. But…we can do all things in Christ who gives us strength. Remember…For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13. Life and goodness are gifts of the Spirit—not something we get from our own work. We really can get nothing or nowhere on our own. Life—eternal life is from God.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

So live life as a gift and promise from God. In His goodness. Enjoy your eternal life…start today.

Prayer ~ Lord, I rejoice in Your love and goodness. A life of goodness—striving for harmony with other Christians and having an attitude of peace and joy with which You bless me.

Promise of Kindness

The LORD is righteous in everything He does; He is filled with kindness. Psalm 145:17

 

God’s word speaks for itself. He is not only kind…but wise.

Don't you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can't you see that His kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?  Romans 2:4

Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. Romans 3:24

Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. Romans 11:22

In His kindness God called you to share in His eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and He will place you on a firm foundation. 1 Peter 5:10

So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins. He has showered His kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1:6-8

Kind, tolerant, sacrificial, supportive, provider of strength, patient, powerful, and loving. Those are a few of the qualities of our God. Who is He to you? Do you trust Him?

Prayer ~ Lord God, Thank You for Your generous and loving kindness to us. Help us to be kind to others.

Promise of Courage

Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.  Isaiah 41:10

Be strong and courageous. Famous words that were given to Joshua…and others throughout the Bible. God promises to give courage...and be with us.

So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you." - Deuteronomy 31:6 (Moses speaking to all of Israel and repeated personally to Joshua.)

Then David continued, "Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don't be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the LORD is finished correctly.” 1 Chronicles 28:20. (David speaking to his son Solomon.)

Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13. (Paul speaking to the people in the church at Corinth.)

Be Courageous.

Like the Sunflower finds its strength in the facing the sun...

Find your strength in facing the Lord.

God has promised to give us courage—not to be discouraged. He will give us strength and help. The right hand indicates power and strength, presumably since most people are right-handed and that is where their strength is.

Your right hand, O LORD, is glorious in power. Your right hand, O LORD, smashes the enemy. Exodus 15:6.

Trust God to provide you with the strength you need…when you need it. That is the key to courage…trust. Trust in the Lord.

I am teaching you today—yes, you—so you will trust in the LORD. Proverbs 22:19.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 NASB

Trust God. That may seem like a big thing…but it is a humbling. Humbling to admit that we need help. We need God. Can you trust Him to provide courage for you?

Prayer ~ Dear God, give us humble hearts to seek You first in our lives…and to trust You with anything that comes our way. The good and the bad. We want to honor You with our lives…our very thoughts, words and actions. Actions often speak louder than words. May ours bring You glory.

Sing Praise

Your love, God, is my song and I’ll sing it. I’m forever telling everyone how faithful you are. Psalm 89:1 The Message.

The wild flowers are especially brilliant and abundant this spring after our snowy and rainy winter. It reminds me of a quote that is on a cross a friend of mine gave me. “The earth laughs in flowers” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The earth is certainly laughing now! And I am singing praises to the Lord for the sheer beauty of His creation. I imagine the flowers are singing, too, joyfully for just being alive.   

We are encouraged in so many Psalms to “sing.”

            Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing to the Lord all the earth.  Psalm 96:1 NIV

            I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will sing praise. Psalm 101:1 NIV

            Oh, give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name…. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him….Psalm 105:1&2

            I will thank the Lord for His righteousness; I will sing about the name of Yahweh the Most High. Psalm 7:17 HCSB

Do you feel like singing praises to the Lord? 

I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise and I was saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:3.

If the enemy is depression, oppression, or just compliancy then we may not feel like praising the Lord. If we do it anyway—it changes our outlook and strengthens our relationship with the Lord.

Prayer ~ Lord, It is good to give You thanks and to sing praises to Your Most High name—Psalm 92:1. I praise You at all times. Praise for You, Lord, is always on my lips—Psalm 34:1.

Are You Living a Blessed Life?

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,

nor standeth in the way of sinners,

nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD;

and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,

that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither;

and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalm 1:1-3 KJV

Blessed is the man, or woman, who delights in the Lord—and follows His commands. Such wise advice. I certainly do delight in the Lord—He makes me happy to just think or whisper His name…Jesus. Do you find joy in the Lord?

How are you doing with reading through the Bible this year? I started off great and was right on schedule for weeks—even ahead of schedule a few days. Then a week or so ago I fell behind—until I found myself a whole seven days behind. Where did those days go? I caught up  now and was glad when I saw that today’s reading included Psalm 1—one of my favorite Bible passages. I think it is a favorite because other than the Lord’s Prayer, Psalm 23 and a few other selected verses over the years in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, this was the first book I really memorized. It is only a few verses and I was in a Confirmation Class that memorized it together so it was one that for which I was accountable to several people. Accountability makes things happen. Are you accountable to anyone for reading your Bible daily or for scripture memorization?

Prayer ~ Lord God, I have hidden Your word in my heart so that I might not sin against You, Psalm 119:11. May all that I think, do and say be pleasing to You—for You are a delight to my soul.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

As usual every Friday is Feast Day—Feasting at the King’s Table. We can’t live on just spiritual food …nor can we live on bread alone. We’ve got to have some meat, veggies and fruit. What food gives you fuel? I’ve discovered that sugar is poison to my body and starches, like pasta and potatoes, are not my friends. I can exist very well on some fruit, veggies and a nice lean portion of meat—nothing deep fried. What would Jesus eat? Probably some hummus with unleavened bread, some figs—in season of course—or some raisins or dates, and some fish—if a little boy with fish left over from his lunch happens to be nearby. 

Peter’s Fish

1 whole white fish per person

Olive oil – extra virgin

Spice mixture – amount depends on number of fish serving – mix spices together.

            Garlic – 1 clove grated with micrograter

            Turmeric – ¼ tsp per fish

            Curry powder - ¼ tsp per fish

            Paprika - ¼ tsp per fish

            Mustard powder – sprinkle

            Black pepper – sprinkle to taste

            Parsley – 1 tbsp per fish, plus garnish

            Lemon juice from 1 lemon or more

Fresh lemon slices for garnish

Drizzle fish with olive oil. Spread spice mixture on fish. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes or until fish flakes easily. Garnish with additional parsley leaves and lemon slices. Enjoy with a tossed green salad and some freshly baked crusty bread.

Promise of a New Body

And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as His adopted children, including the new bodies He has promised us. Romans 8:23

When was the last time you tried to start a new exercise schedule or a new diet so that you could have a “new body”? What wonderful promises God gives us—adoption and a new body! I’ll take both! You may ask…how do I get adopted by God and get a new body? By choice. By choosing to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He sacrificed His life on the cross for your sin. That choice allows us to give up our sinful nature and to be controlled by the Spirit of God—for He lives in those who believe. (Read all of Romans 8.)  I particularly like Romans 8:12-14…Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. We who believe are children…adopted children of God. That gives me such a secure feeling. The new body is what we will receive in Heaven.

We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. God Himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee He has given us His Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 5:2-5 HCSB.

Heavenly bodies—spiritual bodies? What will these new bodies be like? We don’t know…except that God has promised that there will be no pain. Some reading this will shout “Hurrah” for that!

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will no longer exist; grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer, because the previous things have passed away. Revelation 21:4 HCSB

That is a wonderful thing to look forward to. Are you looking for a new body?

Prayer ~ Lord God, help these bodies of ours to endure until you come again…or until we don’t need them anymore. We eagerly await this promise of new bodies and most of all…the reality of our adoption.

Are You Rebellious?

Now if you fear and worship the LORD and listen to His voice, and if you do not rebel against the LORD's commands, then both you and your king will show that you recognize the LORD as your God. But if you rebel against the LORD's commands and refuse to listen to Him, then His hand will be as heavy upon you as it was upon your ancestors. 1 Samuel 12:14-15

This was part of Samuel’s farewell address. He was warning the Israelites that they needed to obey God’s commandment—and not be rebellious. If they refused to listen to Him—refused to respect Him—then they would face punishment. The Israelites wanted a king like the other nations around them, not the Lord God as their king. So God gave them a king. King Saul. Asking for, actually demanding a king, was an act of rebellion—so they asked Samuel to pray to God for them. He assured them that they were still God’s chosen people—He would not abandon them. Samuel warned them again.

"As for me, I will certainly not sin against the LORD by ending my prayers for you. And I will continue to teach you what is good and right. But be sure to fear the LORD and faithfully serve him. Think of all the wonderful things He has done for you. But if you continue to sin, you and your king will be swept away." 1 Samuel 12:23-25

Have you ever been rebellious against the Lord—demanding something from Him? My mother told me I was her rebellious, problem child. I remember trying to smoke a cigarette at the coaxing of some friends who were older. They smoked and thought it was a hoot that I was willing to try it. I just wanted to please them. I was such a people pleaser even in my teens. Needless to say I did not enjoy smoking and never took up that habit. Still Mom was a little worried. Was smoking a rebellious act against God? The Bible doesn’t tell us…thou shall not smoke, but it does say that we are a Temple for God.

Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Probably more important is that by honoring my mother and father, I would be honoring God—showing Him respect by obeying His commandment.

Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12

It’s spring—and there are lots of wild flowers in bloom everywhere. Wild flowers—are they rebellious? They grow unruly, disorderly, uncontrolled, and recklessly abandoned. God created them just as they are—beautiful. Can we be as beautiful in His eyes as those wild, rebellious flowers?

Prayer ~ Lord God, regarding Israel, You said, "All day long I opened my arms to them, but they were disobedient and rebellious." From  Romans 10:21. May the people of Israel see You, Jesus, as their long awaited Messiah. May we all seek to live our lives in ways that are pleasing to You—no rebellion—even if we feel like a wild flower.

Remember Me?

I’ll make you famous for generations. You’ll be the talk of the town for a long, long time. Psalm 45:17 The Message.

Everyone wants to be remembered…and to remember others. Lots of people are finding old friends and relatives on Facebook and with other searches on the Internet. Who’s looking for you…will they remember you? When Jesus was hanging on the cross one of the thieves who was being crucified at the same time said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Luke 23:42. Jesus promised the man that he would be with Him in Paradise. 

Paul was pleased that the people at the church at Corinth remembered him. “Now I praise you because you always remember me and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.” 1 Corinthians 11:2.

The Psalmist requested a favor from God—remember me.

Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people; come near and rescue me. Let me share in the prosperity of your chosen ones. Let me rejoice in the joy of your people; let me praise you with those who are your heritage. Psalm 106:4-5

Jesus reminded His disciples to remember His words. His words are as important as He is.

David praises the Lord and tells the people of Israel to “Remember”–never forget—the Lord—and the benefits that He provides. Benefits. What greater benefit is there than God’s love? He “remembers” us by forgiving our sins, healing our diseases, saving us from the pits of life, and crowning us with lovingkindness.  Bless the LORD, O my soul….

Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise His holy name. Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things He does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle's! Psalm 103:1-5.

When He was speaking to a multitude of followers Jesus also said…

I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, the Son of Man will also acknowledge in the presence of God's angels. But anyone who denies me here on earth will be denied before God's angels. Luke 12:8-9.

Remember me. Acknowledge—a form of remembrance. If we “remember” Jesus in our conversations with others, He will “remember” us in His conversations with our Heavenly Father.

In thinking about “remembering” Jesus I’ve discovered that He has given me insight into my own life that I don’t have to live to please others—which has been a life-long task. I only have to please Him—to be obedient to Him. In seeking Him first—and acknowledging Him, I have an inner peace. Funny thing—as I am obedient to God—I have a more pleasant attitude and so please others. How has God been working in your life today? What are you going to tell others about what Jesus is doing for, with, or through you?

Prayer ~  Lord, Remember me! I praise You and rejoice not only in the beauty of the spring, but also in Your love and the salvation You have so generously provided. I sing praises to Your name. I remember You.

Food is God’s Will

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.” John 4:34 NASB

One of the biggest struggles in my life has been “what is God’s will for my life?” I’ve search scripture passages for hours trying to discern God’s will. Was it to go to college, and then which college; to get married, or not get married; to have children, or not have children; to forgive this person or that action; to get a particular job; or to go to a special place; or which church to attend?

Follow the path of Jesus.

What should I do with my life? Have you struggled with God’s will for your life?

There in Samaria Jesus continues teaching His disciples that He is there to do the will and the work for His Heavenly Father. Notice that Jesus want to “accomplish” God’s work. When He was on the cross, He said, “It is finished.” He meant that the work He came to do on earth was “finished,” but there is still work going on in heaven. Is our work on earth ever done? Jesus didn’t ask us to die on a cross like He did. He did ask us to “carry our own cross and come after Him” or we cannot be His disciples (see Luke 14:27).

That is the best answer for “what is God’s will for my life?” Be Jesus’ disciple. Follow His ways of love, compassion, service, humility, and devotion to God and mankind. It is so simple—why didn’t I see it before? Sometimes the simple things are hidden in all the chaos of today.

Prayer ~ Lord, I pick up my cross again today—to follow and serve You.

Promise of Patience

Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God's promises to be fulfilled. May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:4-6

Paul prayed that the people at the church in Colossae would have the patience they needed as they waited for God's promises to be fulfilled--the same goes for us today. Have patience--God will still fulfill His promise. We still have the hope of Christ's return. 
Then there is the patience we need in our daily lives. What happens when we ask for patience? Usually we get trials to prove that we have or are about to receive patience. Endurance and patience seem to go hand-in-hand. You must endure hardships and trials to get patience. Ask any mother of a two year old! Deep breath--endure. Smile. Patience is needed...with children, co-workers, spouses, parents, siblings, neighbors, store clerks...everyone. God gives patience--but be careful what you ask for. God does want to give us the desire of our hearts. Where is your heart?
       Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew 6:21

Sometime we get patience given to us...sometimes we just have to put it on--wrap ourselves in it. Paul wrote again to the church at Colossae that since they were chosen, holy people they needed to show patience. All those things that Paul was addressing...mercy, kindness, gentleness, patience...are all gifts of the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22-23).

         Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Colossians 3:12

God gives those who love and serve Him--and are filled with His Spirit, gifts. Patience is promised as one of those gifts. What a promise. 

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things. Galatians 5:22-23.
Prayer--Dear God --We pray that we will be strengthened with all Your glorious power so we will have all the endurance and patience we need. Colossians 1:11.

Promise of Peace

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid. John 14:27

How often have you longed for peace--if even just for a few minutes. What is peace to you? A few stress free moments to yourself--to just relax and take in your surroundings. Just to enjoy some quiet. Yes--peace and quiet. Tranquility. How often do parents get that opportunity? Maybe just a few minutes when the kiddos are in bed at night--but there are usually things that need to be done like laundry, cleaning or paying bills. Work is endless.  Or if you are an apartment dweller--how often do you get total quiet? Maybe in the middle of the night? Does that really give you peace?
Jesus promises to give us His gift of peace of mind and heart. Spiritual peace. No one else can bring spiritual peace to your heart and life. When life is turbulent--Jesus brings a tranquility deep in your soul. I know--I've experienced it. It is yours too, for the asking. Jesus said...ask zinc you will receive. Go for it.

Promise of Love

Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them." ... Jesus replied, "All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them." John 14:21, 23

 

Jesus told His followers over and over to obey His commandments...to do what He says. Are you one of His followers? Do you do what He says?

 

Prayer ~ Lord God, You said that the greatest commandment was to love God...and to love our neighbor as ourselves. I love you with all of my mind, soul and strength--show me practical ways to love others around me.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

Martha, Mary and Lazarus had Jesus as a guest in their home many times. One time that is recorded in Luke 10:38-42 describes Martha pleading with Jesus to have Mary help her get dinner ready. She said...."Don't you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand." The Master said, "Martha, dear Martha, you're fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it--it is the main course, and won't be taken from her." From The Message.  Only one thing is needed. Mary was getting her "food"--spiritual food sitting at Jesus' feet and listening to His teachings. One thing is enough. That is a good lesson for me--for spiritual food--and for regular food, too. A one dish meal can provide everything that is needed--no need to have ten different dishes. Still I like to please everyone sitting around my table and not everyone has the same tastes. Fish for some, while others prefer beef, chicken or maybe a vegetarian dish. Some like salads or wraps while others desire just meat and potatoes.

Stir It Up

1/4 pound of meat per person, cut into bite-sized portions

1-2 cups of fresh vegetables, chopped into bite-sized chunked

1-2 cloves of garlic, grated on a microplane

1 tbsp olive oil

Water

Herbs and spices of choice

1/2 cup Cooked noodles or rice, optional

Heat oil and add meat, veggies, including garlic. Add other seasonings. Stir until desired doneness is achieved. Don't undercook the meat or over cook the veggies. You may choose to cook each separately, then stir together. Add rice or noodles if desired. Heat thoroughly. Enjoy. One dish is enough.

Promise of Hope

Rebuild the Wall - Rebuild your life

For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

God made this promise to the Hebrew people while they were captive in Babylon—to bring them home to Israel and to restore their lives. A lot of Christians today use this scripture to remind each other of the hope that we all have today…and in our future. We can see how God worked in the lives of the Hebrew people in Babylon—after 400 years He brought them back home. Of course, we need to remind ourselves of why they were in Babylon in the first place—disobedience. It was a punishment for them to be taken captive to Babylon. After they had paid their dues—served their time so to speak—God brought them back to the Promised Land and instructed them to rebuild the Temple, the wall around the city of Jerusalem and their lives. Rebuilding their lives. That was important. They needed to focus on God. He was the source of their hope. Could they see that? So many of them over the generations had lost their vision. Did some of the Israelites ever have a vision of who God was and what He wanted them to do? Relationship and Obedience. I think those are the key words. The words that foster and encourage hope. God promised that He had plans for them for a future…a future with Him. A relationship with Him in the Promised Land. A land that He had promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. A land that He had brought the children of Israel—those descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—out of bondage in Egypt to a territory flowing with milk and honey. A land where God expected them to worship Him, not idols. A land where obedience and respect were necessary. When that didn’t happen, God lost hope in His people and banished them to Babylon. Then it was time to start again. God had plans for them that included His promise of hope.

Do you see God working in your life today? Do you see a picture of you and God together that includes hope?

Prayer ~ Lord God, give us hope—and may we spread and share Your hope with others—who may be in desperate need of it. Hope is important for life.

Promise of Joy

Jesus said to His disciples…I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father's commandments and remain in His love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! John 15:9-11

Jesus said these comforting, hopeful words of joy to His disciples during His Last Passover Supper with them shortly before He was arrested, tried, and crucified. He was speaking not just to the disciples but to each person who became a follower. In His prayer to His Father in Gethsemane He expressed that desire…praying for all who will ever believe in Him.      

I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.  John 17:20

Are you one of the people for whom Jesus was praying? If you believe in Him as God…as the Son of God…as the one who sacrificed His life for your sin, then you are one of His followers. If not…then do you need more information about Jesus to make a decision about who His is? The prophet Ezra recorded some wise advise that David gave to his son, Solomon.

And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve Him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find Him. But if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. 1 Chronicles 28:9.

Jesus gave similar guidance to the crowd listening to His Sermon on the Mount.

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8 NASB.

Seek the LORD while you can find Him. Call on Him now while He is near. Isaiah 55:6.

Good advice. Look for God…seek Him first in all that you do. One of my favorite verses…and the lyrics to a song I learned as a young Christian…talks about seeking God first.

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33 NASB

As you find God, you will find the joy that He has promised.

Prayer ~ Dear Lord, let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. Psalm 5:11

Promise of Life

I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13

KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE! That says it all. What more could anyone say? You have a pretty face—that will change with age…that you have a lot of money—that could change if the stock market fails or your health fails…that you have a nice family…that too is only temporary here on earth. We will all die one day—but our souls will live on forever. Where we live forever depends on our choices here on earth. If we choose to believe in Jesus…then our eternal home is in Heaven with Him. If we choose not to believe in Jesus as God’s Son, then our eternal home is not heaven—but apart from God.

And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. John 17:3.

The Apostle John wrote to us as a reminder…I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13. Sometimes we need a reminder. This is not our home…

For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come. Hebrews 13:14

In His conversation at His Last Supper, Jesus told His disciples…and us…

There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? John 14:2

Jesus is preparing a place…a home in Heaven for each of His followers. Will you be there?

Prayer ~ Father God, I thank You always for all of my sisters and brothers in Christ, making mention of them in my prayers; constantly bearing in mind their work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in Your presence, knowing Your choice of them; for our gospel did not come to us in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as You know what kind of people we proved to be for Your sake. We wait for Your Son from heaven, whom You raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come. from 1 Thessalonians 1:2-5, 10 NASB. Thanks be to You God—for Your plan for mankind, Your mercy and the wonderful home that Jesus is creating for us in Your Heaven. Help us to make good choices and to live in a way that pleases You.
