Rivers of Living Water

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39  

This was the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles or Booths. Traditionally the Jews in Jerusalem would carry water from the Pool of Siloam to the silver basin at the altar of burnt offering in the Temple on each of the first seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles, but not on the eighth day. That was day that Jesus offered Himself as Living Water—providing eternal life. That must have amazed some of the people that came to hear Him teach. Thirsty—aren’t we all thirsty sometime? Jesus talked about being Living Water with the woman at the well and in this passage above. Living Water is also found in a passage in Jeremiah 17:13… O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake You will be put to shame. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord. Do you hear what is being said in this verse in Jeremiah? Those who reject the Lord will not have eternal life. Pretty straight forward. We can’t make someone believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior…but we can pray for them. Will you do that today? Pray for the lost? 

RSVP: Jesus is offering eternal life today…just as He did there in the Temple at the Feast of Tabernacles. If you have heard and received, then pray for others to do the same. What is your response to Jesus today? 

Prayer~ Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are my praise. Jeremiah 17:14.

Look at the Heart

"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment." John 7:24

Look beyond the pretty outward appearance. Look at the heart—that is what God does. When the Lord directed the prophet Samuel to replace King Saul, He gave him this advice…But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7. Samuel looked at and rejected all of David’s other brothers before David was brought from the field where he was tending his sheep and was chosen and anointed to be the next King of Israel. David became known as a man after God’s own heart because he even though he sinned, he was honestly repentant and sought to know and trust God. That’s how our lives should be—seeking to know God more deeply. Then as we look at others, we’ll see them with God’s eye, not our own, and see past their faults to their true heart.  

RSVP: Jesus is inviting us to see others as He sees them…and to love others as He does. Can you do that?

Speak Truth

Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honor the One who sent him speaks truth, not lies. John 7:18 NLT 

Jesus just wanted to honor His Father—the One who sent Him to earth. So Jesus spoke the truth. He never lied. Wow—He was human, but perfect. Sinless, including no lying—which is also known as “false witness.” You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor…is one of the Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20:16. Jesus was perfect…no matter how hard we try, we cannot be perfect, but we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). That includes honoring God and Christ and not seeking to honor ourselves. Can you do that? 

RSVP: Jesus is calling us to bring glory and honor God, by honoring Him, not ourselves. How will you respond to His call today? 

Prayer~ Jesus, I don’t want to be like the Romans that Paul wrote about… For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools…. Romans 1:21-22. Guard my heart and help me to honor You and the Heavenly Father in all I think, say, and do.

Whose Teachings?

But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. The Jews then were astonished, saying, "How has this man become learned, having never been educated?" So Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself."  John 7:14-17  

Jesus is all wisdom—which He gets from God the Father. He taught what He knew. Truth, love, kindness, goodness, righteousness, peace, patience, joy, gentleness, faith, meekness, and temperance. You may recognize these as the fruit of the Spirit. These are also things that Jesus taught near the beginning of His ministry when He taught what we know as the Sermon on the Mount (see Matthew 5). So what is God’s will? For it is my Father's will that all who see His Son and believe in Him should have eternal life. John 6:40. God wants to see a lot of people in Heaven…everyone. Everyone who believes in Jesus will have eternal life. What a promise. Can you hold on to that?    

RSVP: Jesus taught what His Father wanted Him to teach. Are you reading and relying on those teachings? How will you respond today…will you listen and obey? 

Prayer~ Jesus, Thank you for Your teachings. I cling to Your promises and look forward to spending eternity with You in Heaven. May praise and honor be Yours today—we don’t have to wait until we get to Heaven to give You the praise, honor, glory and blessings.

Murmurings

The Jews sought Him at the feast (of Tabernacles), and said Where is He? And there was much murmuring among the people concerning Him: for some said, “He is a good man;” others said, “Nay, but He deceiveth the people.” Howbeit no man spake openly of Him for fear of the Jews. John 7:11-13 KJV 

People were murmuring. Psst—have you heard? What do you think? Is this man Jesus good or not? He fed five thousand men…yes, five thousand with just five barley loaves and two fishes. And He healed a man with a withered hand…on the Sabbath. Yes. He does miracles. He does good. Yes…He is good.  Murmurings…mistrust. Don’t be afraid of what others say. Check Him out for yourself. 

RSVP: Jesus’ invitation is to not listen to murmurings…to decide for ourselves who He is. How will you respond today? 

Prayer~ Jesus, I believe in You. You are Messiah…my Savior. You are more than a good man…You are God. Redeemer.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

Whether our family is camping or just having a relaxing evening dinner together we love to eat Mexican food and one of our favorites is Tamale Pie.

Skillet Tamale Pie Recipe

12 ounces lean ground beef

1 cup chopped scallions

1 jar (14 ounces) spaghetti sauce (about 1 3⁄4 cups) or a can of stewed tomatoes

1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

3⁄4 cup water

1 box (8 1⁄2 ounces) cornbread mix (Jiffy)

1 can (8 1⁄2 ounces) cream-style corn or a small can of whole kernel corn, drained

1 can (4 1⁄2 ounces) chopped green chiles

1⁄4 cup milk

1 large egg

Optional – 1 cup grated cheese

 

Cook beef and 3⁄4 cup of the scallions in a large nonstick or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat 2 to 3 minutes, breaking up beef with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink. Stir in spaghetti sauce or tomatoes, beans, chili powder, cumin and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 10 to 12 minutes to develop flavors and thicken sauce slightly. 

Meanwhile stir together muffin mix, corn, chiles, milk, egg and remaining 1⁄4 cup scallions (mixture will be soupy). Spoon cornbread mixture over beef mixture to cover. Cover skillet and continue simmering about 12 minutes and then take off the lid and cook an additional 3-5 minutes until top looks dry and a pick inserted in topping comes out with slightly moist crumbs.  If desired, top with grated cheese and replace the cover for about 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.  Enjoy.

Return to…Where?

…Jesus told them, "I will be with you only a little longer. Then I will return to the one who sent me. You will search for me but not find me. And you cannot go where I am going." The Jewish leaders were puzzled by this statement. "Where is he planning to go?" they asked. "Is he thinking of leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands? Maybe he will even teach the Greeks!" John 7:33-35 NLT 

So why couldn’t the Jewish leaders go where Jesus was going? Only because Jesus was going to heaven…and since they didn’t believe in Jesus as the Son of God, they wouldn’t be going to heaven. They were clueless. They thought maybe Jesus was going to visit Jews in other countries or to the Greeks—the Gentiles. We can see the big picture now, but had we been there with Jesus and the Jewish leaders would we have understood where Jesus was going? As believers we know where Jesus went and that we will be going there someday, too. Heaven. Heaven is a wonderful place. There is a kid’s song about heaven…

Heaven is a wonderful place, filled with glory and grace.

I wanna see my Savior’s face, cause heaven is a wonderful place.

I wanna go there!

There is so little that we really know about Heaven. We do know that we will gather around the King’s banquet table…and around His throne where we will sing praises to the King of Kings. It will be a place where there will be no tears. No sadness. Joy filled endless years—eternity. There are lots of stories of people who have had near death or actual death experience and claim to have been to heaven and come back to their life on earth. One of my favorites of those individuals is a little four-year old boy who dies during an appendectomy, goes to heaven where he meets his great grandfather, a sister who died during miscarriage, and even Jesus. Heaven Is For Real has now been made into a movie that will be released April 16^th.  From the trailer releases it looks like it is going to be an outstanding movie—true to the real story. Little Colton gives so many people hope that heaven is a real place. Do you want to go there?   

RSVP: Jesus has told us where He is going—and by believing in Him, acknowledging that He is the Son of God, He invites you to call Heaven your home, too. Will you be going there someday?  How will you respond to His invitation today?    

Prayer~ Jesus, Thank you for Your invitation to make Heaven our home. It will be exciting to be there with You one day—for eternity.

From Where is Messiah?

Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each other, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah? But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from.” While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I’m not here on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don’t know him. But I know him because I come from him, and he sent me to you.” John 7:25-29 NLT 

Back in Jesus time people thought that the Messiah would just appear—they wouldn’t know where He came from. But they knew where Jesus came from—from Nazareth. So He couldn’t be the Messiah—could He? Then Jesus told them that He came from God—but they just didn’t understand. Actually this passage of scripture doesn’t say that He just “told” them, called out—He cried out loudly—trying to not only tell, but teach. How often do we hear something that we just don’t understand?  

RSVP: Jesus was telling the people of Jerusalem that He was sent by God. He is telling us the same thing. How will you respond to His message today? Will you share this good news—He is Messiah? 

Prayer~ Just as was written in Psalms 78…O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—open my ears, Jesus, so that I may understand truths about You, that I may know You more. I will listen to Your instructions as I read Your Words…reveal Yourself to me, as well as to my family and friends.

Another Look at Anger

Treat others the same way you want them to treat you. Luke 6:31 

How do you want others to treat you when you are angry with them? I have mentioned “anger” 84 times in the 823 posts of this blog. Once again I’m considering the “anger” topic since I’ve been doing some reading about anger for an upcoming class for a Parents of Teens Study Group at my church. Dr. Ross Campbell wrote a book, How to Really Love Your Teen that has a terrific chapter on Teenage Anger. He discusses passive aggressive anger that is a subconscious motivation used to get back at an another person (in this case the parent) indirectly to release pent up anger. Young children may do this by soiling their underwear—long after they’ve been potty trained. Teens may do poorly in school work or with housework; misbehave sexually; do drugs; get headaches, ulcers, or skin problems; abuse others or themselves, or commit suicide. All these can be indirectly expressing their anger. Looking at adults who have not learned to manage their anger, you may see the same types of behavior. Managing the anger is the key. Anger is a normal human response. It is how we manage that anger that makes a difference in our relationships. Anger doesn’t just go away—and inappropriate humor does not release the anger, even though it may appear to release the immediate tension. Steps to dealing with anger appropriately are steps towards healthy maturity. Anger ideally would be dealt with pleasantly with those involved seeking resolutions together towards ending the problem that created the anger. Anger management isn’t taught or learned overnight. It takes years to master. The first step is to communicate during a calm time the expectations that anger cannot be expressed in a violent, physical manner or using inappropriate behavior. Limits must be set and the parent must be firm and consistent. Verbal expressions of anger need to be encouraged and trained. This can begin using praise or compliments when the teen verbally expresses their anger in ways that were acceptable (including no cursing). The next step is to ask your teen to verbalize their anger in acceptable ways—like how they should address you with no name calling. A respectful attitude is desirable—but disrespectful attitude can easily be misinterpreted during an angry discussion. Try to discern their attitude—while keeping your own attitude positive and setting a good example. Not so easy if you have anger issues yourself. How will you treat others who are angry with you?  

RSVP: Jesus is encouraging us to deal respectfully and responsibly with anger. He wants us to treat others the way we ourselves want to be treated. Additionally, don’t stuff anger away only to have it blow up in your faces later when you least likely can deal with it. He wants you to come to Him and share your burden with Him…and not let the sun go down on your anger. Can you do that? 

Prayer~ Jesus, as You taught us through the Apostle Paul in Ephesians…BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger… Ephesians 4:26. Help us to live as You have taught us.

Who is God?

For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God….Psalms 18:31

David wrote this Psalm when the Lord delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul. It is repeated in 2 Samuel 22. Lord, how I love you! For you have done such tremendous things for me. The Lord is my fort where I can enter and be safe; no one can follow me in and slay me. He is a rugged mountain where I hide; he is my Savior, a rock where none can reach me, and a tower of safety. He is my shield. He is like the strong horn of a mighty fighting bull. All I need to do is cry to him—oh, praise the Lord—and I am saved from all my enemies! Psalm 18:1-3 LT. For the last thirty days this blog has been considering the qualities and titles of God. Considering those...Who is God to you?

God is… "I AM WHO I AM." Exodus 3:14. God is eternal—forever has been, forever will be. He is creator, redeemer, savior, judge, merciful, almighty, strength, power, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Father, love, good, provider, sanctifier, peace, immutable, transcendent, just, holy, healer, physician, priest, mediator, intercessor, self-sufficient, infinite, omniscient, omnipresent, sovereign, victor, wise, faithful, wrathful, full of grace, comforter, head of the church, friend, Emmanuel—with us always, Word, Alpha and Omega, the Light of the World, Hope and…God is Spirit. Who is God to you? Trust Him to be your God—for He is all of this…and more.

RSVP: Jesus is continually revealing Himself to you. Do you see Him for who He is? Jesus is God. How will you respond to His offer of Hope, strength, and peace in your life today?

God is Jehovah-Raah

Day 30 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:1-6 

As Jacob was dying he blessed each of his sons. He blessed Joseph, and said, "The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day….” Genesis 48:15.  The Lord is my shepherd. Raah means "shepherd" in Hebrew. Just as we read in Psalm 23, a shepherd is one who feeds or leads his flock to pasture and keeps them safe. He cares for them.  Also see Ezekiel 34:11-15 for a description of shepherd’s duties. An extend translation of this word, rea', is "friend" or "companion." This demonstrates the intimacy God desires between Himself and His people. Jehovah is Lord. When the two words are combined - Jehovah Raah - it can be translated as "The Lord my Friend." Friend and shepherd—can a relationship with this God get any better? One who really cares about you and one who desires to share your life. That is our awesome God. 

RSVP: Jesus, our loving shepherd wants to guide us in paths of righteousness—right living—for His name sake. Recently I heard a man describe his mother’s theory of child rearing in a small town as—go play and do as you want, but don’t embarrass me or our family. Can you hear Jesus saying that to you? Live under my care—let Me be your shepherd and don’t embarrass Me. I won’t embarrass you. How will you respond to His call today?  

Prayer~ Lord, You are my shepherd and my friend. I feel Your love and protection. Please continue to cover not only me, but my family, friends, neighbors and my community with Your protection and guidance. Give us wisdom as we seek out ways to serve and honor You—for You are worthy of our praise.

God is Elohim

Day 29 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. Genesis 17:7-8 

An everlasting commitment between God and His people is what that scripture passage is all about. Elohim means strength or power. This Elohim is the God that is first spoken of in Genesis 1:1… In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth. This means that He has supreme power, sovereignty, and this covenant commitment that He is faithful to keep will last forever. Our God is truly an awesome God—above all gods. He is worthy of our love and our commitment to Him. He gave the land He promised to Abraham in this passage to Abraham’s descendants for eternity. Is this the physical land of Israel? Or is it a spiritual land—heaven? Or both? Only God knows that. It has been thousands of years since Abraham received this promise from God…and the Israelites are again in the same land. That is quite a promise. There have been battles almost continually for that territory, but God’s people have prevailed and now for the most part it is theirs. Is God their God…and is He ours? I see that as a personal question…a personal commitment. Many in Israel today see God as the God of their nation, not as their personal God with whom they have a relationship. Christianity is all about “relationships.”   

RSVP: Jesus is reminding us today of the covenant that He made with Abraham—an everlasting covenant between Him and Abraham’s descendants. Are you a spiritual descendant of Abraham’s? How can you respond to Jesus today as He invites us to enter into a relationship around His Table? 

Prayer~ Jesus, You have promised in the book of Jerimiah that when You return You will establish a new covenant with Israel. "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people."  Jeremiah 31:31-33. I claim that promise for myself, too. You are my God and I shall be part of Your people. Thank you for this promise.

God is Adonai

Day 28 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord GOD. Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD! For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know. For this reason You are great, O Lord GOD; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.” 2 Samuel 7:18-22 

Adonai means Master or Lord. God wants us to acknowledge Him as the Lord of our lives and our Master, recognizing that we are His servants. David was known as a man after God’s own heart. I think that is because even though he sinned, he was totally repentant and honest before God. He acknowledged that there is no other God—that’s what we need to do, too. No idols in our homes or hearts—nothing that has more respect that God Himself.  Can you say that? I’m trying to cut back on the television programs that I watch…and that is easy since I’ve overloaded myself with other responsibilities like another Bible study to prepare for each week. I still need to look at the fact that it may or may not be directing my focus to the Lord Himself. I am reminded of a scripture that tells us what happens to those who worship other gods. It shall come about if you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish. Deuteronomy 8:19. The people who serve other gods will die—perish. That is an eternal death—not just an earthly body death. We’re all going to die sometime—but those who are servants of the Lord Most High will spend eternity with Him in heaven—no spiritual death for them. No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. Matthew 6:24. Whom do you serve? Will you be one that will sit at the Lord’s Table one day? 

RSVP: Jesus is listening for our response like that of David’s. Does He know you as His servant? How will you respond today? 

Prayer~ Jesus, I understand that You, LORD God, require us to fear You, to walk in all Your ways, to love You, and to serve You as the LORD our God with all our heart and with all our soul…. Deuteronomy 10:12. Help us to be like David—people after Your own heart, honest and repentant, serving only You. 

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

This is an original recipe by my sister, Shirley Jeske Woody, who loved to cook as much as she loved to play the piano—which was a great passion for her. One day we will feast together around the King’s Table. Maybe she’ll create another dish just for that occasion. 

 Krautburger Casserole

1 lb. hamburger

Salt and pepper

1 1-lb can sauerkraut, drained

1 can diced or stewed tomatoes

8 oz. mozzarella cheese, grated 

Brown hamburger in skillet. Drain off excess grease. Season with salt and pepper. Add tomatooe. Add sauerkraut. Stir together. Stir cheese into mixture. Pour into greased 1 ½ quart casserole dish. Bake in 325 over for 20 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted. This casserole may be prepared entirely in a skillet by heating thoroughly before adding the cheese. It will be juicier unless some of the tomato liquid is reserved before the tomatoes are added. This is good served over toast, brown rice or wide egg noodles.

God is Our Intercessor

Day 27 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 

Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert. See Matthew 4:1-11. There are three basic areas of sin: lust of the flesh, pride of life and lust of the eyes. The devil tempted Jesus when He was hungry and far from any sources of food by suggesting that Jesus command that stones be turned to bread, not that He pray to the Father for the stones be changed into bread, but that Jesus use His own power  to relieve His fleshly desire for food. Jesus didn’t give in to that temptation. Nor did He succumb to the devil’s suggestion that Jesus throw Himself off the highest point of the temple and have angels save Him, a temptation of pride. The last temptation proposed by the devil was to give Jesus all the kingdoms and power of the world if He would worship him (the devil). Jesus didn’t fall for that temptation of the lust of the eyes either. All temptations can be categorized by these same three temptations. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13. God prepares us for temptations that we face. In addition, not only will He not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle, but He provides a way of escape. Next time you are tempted to do something that isn’t what God wants you to do, look for that “way of escape” and follow the path that Jesus is providing. 

RSVP: Jesus is offering you an invitation to follow Him. As He prayed with His disciples, “lead us not into temptation…” (Matthew 6:13), He intercedes for us offering us a “way out” of a challenging circumstance and a new path, with grace and mercy, down a better road. How will you respond to Jesus offer today? 

Prayer~ Thank You, Jesus…Since You Yourself went through suffering and testing, You are able to help us when we are being tested. Hebrews 2:18 NLT. For that we praise You.

God is Father

Day 26 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God's Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, "Abba, Father." For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God's children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. Romans 8:15-17 NLT 

My Grandfather on my Dad’s side of the family was German—born in Romania and came to the United States as a teenager. He spoke Russian, German, and some English. I remember him as a sort of gruff—but he had a great smile with a twinkle in his eyes and a nod of his head to let you know that he cared about you—and I knew I’d better behave when he gave that nod. One time we were at Grandma and Granddad’s house for a meal and there were a lot of people there. The family only spoke German together—except for us grandkids who only knew the greetings and a few other words. Granddad offered the blessing for the food, simply, “Abba Vater, Amen.” At the time I thought he was saying that we all loved the Father—alle lieben den Vater, but in reality he was acknowledging God as the Father, the provider for us all. That is how God the Father is—the provider. He provided the earth and all that is in it including His Son—who He gave us to give us eternal life. For that, we must “alle lieben den Vater,” our loving Heavenly Father.  

RSVP: Jesus introduced us to His Father many times in the Gospels. To know Him is to know the Father. How will you respond today to know the Father more deeply? 

Prayer~ Jesus, it is amazing that the Heavenly Father calls us His children—just like You. Thank you for teaching us about Him and for sharing eternity with us. Just as You taught Your disciples to pray…  Our Father in heaven, we honor your holy name. We ask that your kingdom will come now. May your will be done here on earth, just as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:9-10 LT). May Your name Father God be holy in my heart, soul and mind—as I love You today and through eternity.

God is El-Shaddai

Day 25 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

From the God of your father who helps you, and by the Almighty who blesses you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. Genesis 49:25

God Almighty. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.  Psalms 91:1  He is all-sufficient and provides everything…air, earth, food, companions, protection and the beauty of His love, grace and blessings which are more bountiful than we could ever deserve. How could life be any better?

RSVP: Jesus is offering us everything. How will you respond—RSVP today to His generosity?

God is Our Comforter

Day 24 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

 

Comfort - to soothe, console, or reassure; bring cheer to. I’ve always like the scripture about the hen gathering her chicks under her wings…it is a comforting, reassuring verse. … How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings…. Luke 13:34 Growing up on a farm where we had a few chickens—I know what it means to a mother hen to gather her chicks. Comfort and protect. God comforts and protects us in our afflictions the same way as that mother hen. Afflictions, whether they are physical, emotional or spiritual, can all be mercifully comforted…healed. Just as God comforts us…we are admonished to give comfort. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:18. Words of comfort, reassurance and encouragement.

 

RSVP: How will you respond to Jesus’ invitation today to receive and to give comfort? You have a choice.

God is Wrathful

Day 23 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

A jealous and avenging God is the LORD; The LORD is avenging and wrathful. The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies. The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. In whirlwind and storm is His way, and clouds are the dust beneath His feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; He dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossoms of Lebanon wither. Mountains quake because of Him and the hills dissolve; indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence, the world and all the inhabitants in it. Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken up by Him. The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who take refuge in Him. But with an overflowing flood He will make a complete end of its site, and will pursue His enemies into darkness. Nahum 1:2-8  

Wow! You don’t want to be on the wrong side of God! Avenging, jealous and full of wrath. I am reminded of the verse in which God promises to take care those who don’t treat His children properly. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. Romans 12:19. Revenge can be such an ugly situation, filled with bitterness and remorse. We don’t have to be involved in that. Just release it to the Lord. I’ve been there…done that. It is a very freeing feeling to not seek revenge for some wrong action—just let the Lord handle it. Cease from anger and forsake wrath; do not fret; it leads only to evildoing. Psalms 37:8 

RSVP: Jesus is requesting today that we release any feelings of revenge to Him. Can you do that today? 

Prayer~ Jesus, I take refuge in You today…refuge from the mundane things of life and a past anger and bitterness that was eating away at my soul. Thank you for freeing me.

God is Full of Grace

Day 22 of 30 days of Praying the Name and Attributes of God

God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins. He has showered His kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1:5-8 NLT 

Praise God from whom all blessings flow…. I feel so blessed to be part of God’s family. As I consider God’s gift to us…sacrificing His Son so that one day we may approach His throne in a white robe—pure and spotless before Him—I am overwhelmed. Do you feel that joy, too? He is so generous and full of grace. What a gift…and it isn’t even my birthday!

For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; no good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. Psalms 84:11  

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled…. Hebrews 12:15

RSVP: God is offering you a present today whether it is your birthday or not. His gift is His Son and a pure life for eternity. How will you respond to this gracious gift? Can you share it with others? 

Prayer~ God, You have given us a gift and promised that by grace we have been saved through faith; and not of ourselves or anything we have done. Ephesians 2:8 Thank you.
