Follow Advice

But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, "We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word." Acts 6:1-4

Rumblings of discontent. Have times never changed? Are there rumblings of discontent among your church? From time to time I think all churches experience that. Right now our church is rumbling—but not with discontent. Due to health issues within her family our Pastor is planning to step down as the main pastor—so our church must begin a search for a new pastor. We’re sad to say good-bye to our wonderful pastor and shepherd, her husband and sweet mama. Rumblings. Sad rumblings.

The way that the apostles handled their rumbling of discontent was wonderfully miraculous. They delegated. Wise move. That way they could focus on prayer and teaching. Those were important things to Jesus…so they must be priority to the apostles as well.

Look back at Moses time. He was having to spend a lot of time of time dealing with people issues. His father-in-law, Jethro, a Midian priest, gave Moses good advice to chose a man from each tribe—one who fears God and hates bribes—to help carry the load and thus assist to solve the people’s common disputes. See Exodus 18:13-27, with the key verse…Moses listened to his father-in-law's advice and followed his suggestions. Exodus 18:24. He followed Jethro’s advice.

At the time of Acts, the apostles didn’t want to spend their time dealing with disputes and running a food program—but instead they wanted to focus on connecting with God in prayer and teaching new believers—connecting them to God’s will and ways. Teaching them to be obedient. Obedience is the key. Listen and obey.

If you listen to these regulations and faithfully obey them, the LORD your God will keep his covenant of unfailing love with you, as he promised with an oath to your ancestors. Deuteronomy 7:12

Listen and obey. That is what is happening when a person follows wise advice. Are you willing to follow the advice of others? Of course, check to make sure it is wise advice. Is it consistent with scripture. Does it draw you to or away from the Lord? Who gets the glory?

Prayer ~ Jesus, help us to listen with ears to hear Your words and to follow You with radical obedience.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

What are you serving with your turkey on Thanksgiving Day—or the evening before…or breakfast Friday morning? Here’s a quick and tasty bar that a friend recently made and I adapted to be gluten free.

Cranberry Nut Bars

2 eggs

1 cup sugar
1 cup gluten-free flour blend

1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 1/4 cups Ocean Spray® Fresh or Frozen Cranberries

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch baking pan. Beat eggs in a medium mixing bowl until thick. Gradually add sugar, beating until thoroughly blended. Stir in flour and melted butter; blend well. Add cranberries and walnuts, mixing gently just until combined. Spread the batter evenly in the greased pan.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool a bit and cut into bars. Great served warm. Good with Thanksgiving dinner or for breakfast on Black Friday. Makes 16 servings.

Go Into Your Community…Your Region

After the resurrection of Jesus…

So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, "Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?" He replied, "The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. Acts 1:6-9

What can you authenticate—endorse—corroborate about Jesus? He told His followers that they would be witnesses for Him. They would be “one who testifies” for Him (according to the Blue Letter Bible, Thayer’s Greek Lexicon). Are you one who could testify for Jesus? How much do you know about Him…about what He said and what He did? Like His disciples we are to go and tell people everywhere about Him. Jerusalem is the city where they were when Jesus was resurrected—Judea was the region—equivalent probably to each of the states in the United States. Samaria was a region north of Judea where those who were considered outcasts from the Jewish community—half-breeds lived. What would be equivalent in your life to those places that Jesus called out? Jerusalem—for me would be Richland, Washington. Judea—eastern Washington State. Samaria? Now really we don’t have towns or regions that we shun…but are there individuals with whom you don’t associate? Neighborhoods that you don’t go into because you just don’t feel safe or welcome there? How about the ends of the earth?

As the disciples asked Jesus… has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom? The answer is still the same. “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.” We don’t know the hour or the day—but we still can be ready.

You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. Luke 12:40

We shouldn’t be lazy—sitting around stuffing our faces with popcorn and caramels watching something on TV that we wouldn’t watch with Jesus. Be ready…vigilant. Spreading the Good News—that Jesus IS the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. What is your comfort level with spreading this Good News? How will you tell or show others about Jesus? I blog. I AM…With You Always

Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20

Each of these scriptures in Matthew and Mark is just a little different, as is the similar passage in Acts…but Jesus Christ’s message to His disciples was basically for them to “Go into the world” and “make disciples of all the nations.” Go and tell everyone…not just the Jews. Go everywhere…not just the nation of Israel. Go to the ends of the earth.

And then he told them, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed." When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand. Mark 16:15-19

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Does it sometimes seem like the end of the earth to cross the street or to turn to someone in a check-out line at the store…and tell them about Jesus? Talking about the weather…or an upcoming holiday is always a good excuse to bring up Jesus…the creator of the universe—and thus the creator of our weather. Being aware of the emotional state of others is often made possible by the Holy Spirit. Pay attention. Sometimes people will be open about events in their lives…like a grandmother who just had a stroke…that will give you an opportunity to pray for them—right then and there. Even remarking that someone seems especially happy can open the conversation to an opportunity to praise the Lord. Be the eyes, ears, hand and feet of Jesus. Be ready to serve, assist, pray or rejoice. That is what our life in Christ is all about. Obedience.

Prayer ~ Dear Jesus—You are the I AM that spoke to Moses and sent Him to help your people in Egypt. Help us to be eyes, ears, hands and feet today. There are so many who need a loving touch or word…and we are here to honor You and do what we can to serve You by serving others. We love You…and those You have put here in our midst.

Risen From The Dead

Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you." The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to give the disciples the angel's message. And as they went, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they ran to him, grasped his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Don't be afraid! Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there." Matthew 28:1-10

Risen from the dead! How many people do you know who are risen from the dead? Jesus Himself raised at least three people—Lazarus, Jairus’ daughter, and a widow’s son. (John 11:17-44; Matthew 9:18-19; and Luke 7:11-15). At Jesus’ resurrection there were graves opened and many people were resurrected with Him (Matthew 27:52-53)—a sign of First Fruits. But today, do we see people coming back to life after dying? There are some who have near death experience—in hospitals or at scenes of accidents. One of my brothers even received a huge electrical shock, had the white light at the end of the tunnel experience—and heard the voice of Jesus tell him that he had to go back. Death happens. Life happens. But no other god had died and been risen from the dead like Jesus! What a claim to His authority and power. He is the true God—living.

In the Apostles’ Creed—one that is used by most protestant churches it states that we believe in Jesus Christ who was crucified, died and was buried…and on the third day He rose again. We believe.

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;

On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Note that the Apostles Creed also states that we believe in the resurrection of the body—the body of the church—made up of individual. One day we will be resurrected, just like Jesus. What a glorious day that will be! I’ve had friends over the years that as we parted for the last time—moved away—we said…"I’ll see you in the air or up there." Up in the air as we are raptured or in heaven…in our resurrected bodies. Will you join us…in the air…or up there? The choice is yours. Choose Jesus as your Savior and you’ll be resurrected one day…just as He was.

Prayer ~ Heavenly Father, we praise You for Your glorious plan of redemption and salvation. We look forward to our resurrection…to be like Jesus.

Do You Hear a Rooster Crowing?

After Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane He was taken to Roman officials and Temple priests for trial.

Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest's courtyard with Jesus. Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in. The woman asked Peter, "You're not one of that man's disciples, are you?" "No," he said, "I am not." Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself. …. Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, "You're not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "No, I am not." But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Didn't I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?" Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed. John 18:15-18; 25-27

Peter—one of the greatest and most well-known disciples—denied Jesus. He said he didn’t know Him. Would you ever do the same? During the Last Supper, before Jesus arrest, Jesus told Peter that he would deny Jesus.

Simon Peter asked, "Lord, where are you going?" And Jesus replied, "You can't go with me now, but you will follow me later." "But why can't I come now, Lord?" he asked. "I'm ready to die for you." Jesus answered, "Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me. John 13:36-38.

Listen for the rooster crow. Do you hear it? Peter denied Jesus. Remember Jesus expects His followers to stand up for Him—publicly.

Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven. Matthew 10:32-33

Can you stand up for Jesus…today? Or will you deny Him?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus—give me the courage to stand up for You. I love You and as You have promised to never leave me or forsake me…I promise You that I will never leave You or forsake you.

Don't Stumble

I have told you these things so that you won't abandon your faith. For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. John 16:1-3

Another translation starts this passage saying…"These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling." John 16:1 NASB. Stumbling. I have fallen…just stumbled and landed on the ground a couple of times lately in my yard. Once I was sweeping leaves and the other time trying to walk around some bags of leaves and trash…and then decided to back up and find another way—but I tripped, stumbled, and fell. Kerplank! On my bottom. Ouch! That is an example of a physical stumble—but do we fall or stumble spiritually? The New Living Translation gives a suggestion of “abandoning” your faith. That would be a travesty. Jesus told His disciples…I have told you these things. What things? Always look back at the verses or thoughts prior to “these things” or “therefore” statements. I think Jesus was reminding His disciples that He loved them and that they were going to have to go through some hard times, some persecution because of their love for Him. The world hates them, but God was going to send the Holy Spirit to be their helper and comforter. That promise of the Holy Spirit was fulfilled at Pentecost.

Don't fly away...and abandon your faith.

We should accept the same encouragement from Jesus’ teaching. Don’t abandon your faith when you feel the world hates you. Hate is an emotion that “kills” a person’s character. Actually, if you look at it closely, it can damage both the person feeling the hate and the one to whom it is directed. Hate ruins relationships...and can turn inward in the person feeling that hate and anger resulting in sickness as the emotions stress that person’s internal organs. Of course, there are wrinkles that form, too, from the scowling face muscles. The person being hated may not even be distressed by the anger, but it will eat that hater alive. Jesus had already taught His disciples a very good lesson.

But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. Luke 6:27-28 NLT

For those who have been physically killed by the hate and anger of the unrighteous person, like those people last week in a Texas church, may God bless and comfort their families and friends. Jesus told us that the world is going to hate us. Don’t allow that hate to cause you to abandon your faith.

Prayer ~ Jesus, We know that You love us. God loved us so much that He sent You, His one and only Son, that whoever believes in You will have eternal life. God sent You into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through You. (From John 3:16-17.) Thank You, Jesus, for Your love and for Your obedience to the Father.

Chosen?

Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with the mighty blast of a trumpet, and they will gather his chosen ones from all over the world—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven. Matthew 24:29-31

Anguish will be over…but scary times ahead. Darkened sunlight and no moonlight…stars falling…heaven shaking. It was a bit bewildering when we had the recent solar eclipse and there was darkness in the middle of the day. Not true darkness, but a dimness that made you feel uneasy—and then it returned to normal. How will it be at this time that Jesus described as recorded in Matthew? Will the sunlight come back before everyone sees Him coming on the clouds? This is such an exciting passage. Deep mourning—must be from those who don’t believe—from those who thought they had more time. To not decide to choose Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is a decision AGAINST Him. When He comes in His glory and power, I for one want to be standing in awe praising Him. He is my Lord and Savior. It is not likely that I’ll still be alive—but we don’t know the hour or the day of Christ’s return. Choose today whom you will serve.

But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15

The choice is yours…and you can’t choose for anyone else. Each of your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors has to make their own choice. Choose Jesus—choose life. Choose another god—as if anyone could chose NO god—is a refusal of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us all on the cross…and a refusal of God’s love. Whom do you choose? When Jesus Christ returns the angels of the Lord will gather His chosen ones. Will you be among them?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus—I chose You. I will serve You will all of my heart, mind, soul and strength. I pray that all that I think, say and do will bring You honor and glory. I so look forward to hearing that trumpet blast and to seeing You at Your return. Glory! Glory! Glory!

Warning to Those Who are Listening

Then if anyone tells you, 'Look, here is the Messiah,' or 'There he is,' don't believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God's chosen ones. See, I have warned you about this ahead of time. So if someone tells you, 'Look, the Messiah is out in the desert,' don't bother to go and look. Or, 'Look, he is hiding here,' don't believe it! For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near. Matthew 24:23-28

Have you ever seen vultures circling around way up high in the sky? They’ve spotted their supper…and are about to swoop in for the feast. Likely the animal they are about to eat is already dead…or is near death. It is a carcass calling to them—dinner time. That is just how the signs of the end times will be for us. Be ready. Jesus has told us, I have warned you about this ahead of time. How much more do we need? Those with ears…listen.

Prayer ~ Dear Jesus, open our ears and eye to Your words…that we would listen and obey…that we would see the signs and not misinterpret them.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

It is time to get ready for Thanksgiving. Here’s a tasty cranberry sauce that you can prepare a couple hours or the day before your special meal. My family loves pears—so this is a special addition to our menu. Sometimes instead of just zesting the orange I chop up the whole orange and add that, along with the juice.

Cranberry Sauce

1 bag - 12 ounce fresh cranberries 3 cups finely chopped pears (about 2 medium pears)
1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice with the zest of one orange
1/2 cup golden raisins

1 cup sugar, or less to taste
3 tablespoons minced crystallized ginger (candied ginger)
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Cover and bring to a gentle boil over a medium-low heat. Cook about 15 minutes. Uncover, reduce heat to a simmer and cook about 5 minutes until sauce thickens. Transfer the sauce to a heatproof serving dish and cool 10 minutes. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Makes 3 cups. Serve with turkey, and then on turkey sandwiches the next day. (Adapted from an Associated Press Recipe in 2008.)

Suffering Shortened Mercifully

The day is coming when you will see what Daniel the prophet spoke about—the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing in the Holy Place. (Reader, pay attention!) Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat. How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. And pray that your flight will not be in winter or on the Sabbath. For there will be greater anguish than at any time since the world began. And it will never be so great again. In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, not a single person will survive. But it will be shortened for the sake of God's chosen ones. Matthew 24:15-22

Similar scripture is recorded in Mark 13:19-20. God is going to be merciful and shorten the time so that people won’t have to suffer so much. There will be calamity and anguish so great that it can’t be endured, but God has promised to give relief to the afflicted.

For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 2 Thessalonians 1:6-8 NASB

Endure to the end. That will be difficult for those who are still alive at that time—but endure is the key word. Endure to the end. God’s kingdom will endure forever. God in His mercy will shorten the time of anguish and calamity for the sake of His chosen ones. The Israelites…and the Christians? The Israelites are His chosen ones and the Christians are His adopted ones. Keep on keeping on. In the anguish of the time—don’t give up on Jesus. He didn’t give up on us…as He hung on the cross…He didn’t say—I’ve had enough and call on angels to rescue Him. No. He endured to the end.

Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty." A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit. John 19:28-30

He finished what He came to do…to teach people how to live—to be obedient to the Father—and to be the sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. He did that for you. Don’t be ashamed to tell others about Him…about what He has done for you…and what He is doing for us all.

So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don't be ashamed of me (Paul), either, even though I'm in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News. For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 1:8-9

Live obediently in that grace. That is what I think we are called to do. Endure. Live obediently.

Prayer ~ Lord God, Help us all to endure and to live obediently. We can do all things through Christ who gives us strength. Philippians 4:13. Make us more sensitive to and appreciative of those believers who are suffering for our sake. When one suffers, as the body of Christ, we all suffer. Please do be merciful and shorten those days of suffering.

Guard Your Heart – Don’t Be Deceived

Jesus told them, "Don't let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah.' They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don't panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won't follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people.” Matthew 24:4-11

Jesus doesn’t want us to be deceived—horn swaggled—jerked around. He wants us to see the truth for what it is and not be led astray. Be on guard. Think. Don’t let anyone fool you into believing some untruth. If someone says something…judge it against scripture. Discern if God’s voice in what you are being told.

What is the message? Is it consistent with scripture?
What is the outcome? Does it draw us away to towards the Lord?

Who gets the glory? All the glory should go to God.

Killing people in churches didn’t seem to be something that happened here in the United States, but there have been a couple of these types of persecution that have occurred lately. One shooting over a year ago in Charleston, South Carolina hit home as my grandson knew a boy who was there in that church, although he was not shot. Too close for comfort. The shooting last week in Texas is heart breaking—even some consider, preventable. If only… the shooter had been reported as a domestic violence abuser he would not have been able to buy a gun, but would that have stopped him? Are we safe in our churches? The church we attend has a guard at the door each week—just to be sure we don’t have issues. Safety first. Guard the door—to your church and to your heart. Don’t be deceived.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You even taught in the Old Testament... "But be careful. Don't let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the LORD and serve and worship other gods." Deuteronomy 11:16. Open our eyes and our hearts to hear Your word, Your teachings clearly, that we would not be deceived.

Kingdom Preached Everywhere

And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14

Good News! The angels sang…and declared to the shepherds at the birth of Jesus.

Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! Luke 2:9-11

Good News!

Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. Matthew 9:35

Good News! Things that pertain to Christian salvation. Things that proclaim the power of Jesus—the Son of God. Imagine Good News—the power and triumph of the Messiah—Jesus Christ. The Good News is Heaven—God’s Kingdom, which is based on the love of God who gave us His Son, Jesus—to be our Savior, the ultimate sacrifice for our sin. The perfect promise given and kept. The Good News of the Kingdom of God is a promise for everyone around the world—throughout time. Can you imagine how many people will be in heaven? People from around the world. Have you accepted what God has given?

Prayer ~ Dear Jesus—thank you for being that ultimate sacrifice for us. You are the Good News.

Tribulation Shortened?

For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will. Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. Mark 13:19-20 NASB

God, in the original Greek, theos, represents the Trinity. Father, Son and Holy Spirit were all present at the creation. Here the scripture is describing end times time of tribulation, thlipsis, which will be a horrific time of oppression, affliction and distress. God in His mercy will shorten the time of the tribulation. What a great promise for those who will be living during that time. This passage tells us that God’s elect will still be on earth. Jesus has told us to be prepared.

- However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don't know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert! Mark 13:32-33

- You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. Luke 12:40

Be on guard and be ready…but still live for today. The tribulation will come…but maybe not in our lifetime. Meanwhile back on earth…let your light shine.

Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see.

For the glory of the LORD rises to shine on you.

Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the LORD rises and appears over you.

All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.

Look and see, for everyone is coming home! Your sons are coming from distant lands; your little daughters will be carried home.

Your eyes will shine, and your heart will thrill with joy, for merchants from around the world will come to you. They will bring you the wealth of many lands. Isaiah 60:1-5

Israel will return to the land—the Promised Land…and they are returning—and have been since even before 1948. Let your light shine for all to see…Israel and all of the Lord’s followers around the world. Is your light shining?

Prayer ~ Lord God—Your plan is awesome. We are on guard as we wait patiently for Jesus return.

Wars and Rumors of Wars---Don’t Panic

"Teacher," they asked, "when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to take place?" He replied, "Don't let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and saying, 'The time has come!' But don't believe them. And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don't panic. Yes, these things must take place first, but the end won't follow immediately." Then he added, "Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. So don't worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you, for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you! Luke 21:7-15

The Holy Spirit - like a dove -will give us the words to say.

War and rumors of war. That has been happening forever…since the disciples asked Jesus, “When will all this happen?” There have been books written and YouTube videos posted that describe this current age as the Last Days, but it will happen in God’s time…not ours. As Jesus said…Don’t let anyone mislead you…don’t panic…the end won’t follow immediately….and don’t worry in advance. My favorite promise from Jesus is that He will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5). What a great promise! As times may get tough even during our lifetime…we can be assured that Jesus is still always with us.

But when you are arrested and stand trial, don't worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. Mark 13:11

Do you feel like you just don’t know what to say sometimes? Well, imagine how you’ll feel when you are imprisoned and having to stand before a court charging you with being a Christian. This will be a scary time for whoever is still living during this turbulent time. I’m not exactly a confident public speaker—but I do love my Lord, Jesus. Remember Jesus expects His followers to stand up for Him—publicly.

Don’t worry. The Holy Spirit will give you the words to say—to acknowledge that Jesus is your Savior. Can you do it? Remember… I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13. Is He your Savior? If not…seek Him today…and know that you’ll never be alone again. And when the times comes He will do all that He has promised. We can trust Him.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus—fill us with Your Holy Spirit and give us just the right words to say…even now. Not just if we are imprisoned—but always—that we can confidently speak up for you. You are worthy.

The Trap

Later the leaders sent some Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested. "Teacher," they said, "we know how honest you are. You are impartial and don't play favorites. You teach the way of God truthfully. Now tell us—is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them, or shouldn't we?" Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, "Why are you trying to trap me? Show me a Roman coin, and I'll tell you." When they handed it to him, he asked, "Whose picture and title are stamped on it?" "Caesar's," they replied. "Well, then," Jesus said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God." His reply completely amazed them. Mark 12:13-17

Follow these animal tracks and trap it!

The trap. Like an animal in the forest or the desert…the Jewish leaders wanted to trap Jesus. Were they successful? No. They tried to get to compliment Him saying that they recognized that He rightly taught God’s ways, but wanted to twist His devotion—His loyalty to the Roman government. Seriously, how loyal were they to the Romans? Oh, they paid their taxes—but they were still looking for a Messiah, too, who could set them free from the Roman oppression. Should we pay taxes? As if they thought that Jesus had the power to tell them not to pay. No. If He said, “Don’t pay” they would have the Romans arrest Him and throw Him in jail. Such hypocrites. But Jesus is smarter, wiser, and amazed them! This shrewdness was described by one of Job’s friends as he was sitting around suffering.

But as for me, I would seek God, and I would place my cause before God; Who does great and unsearchable things, Wonders without number. He gives rain on the earth And sends water on the fields, So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And those who mourn are lifted to safety. He frustrates the plotting of the shrewd, So that their hands cannot attain success. He captures the wise by their own shrewdness, and the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted. Job 5:8-13 NASB

“Give to Caesar what belong to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” What belongs to God? Everything. Did those Pharisees follow His advise?

What will you give to God today? Your money and time—or just a tithe of those things? Your family? Your home? Your car? Your heart…and your life?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, I give You all that I have…and all that I am. Use me today as Your willing servant to be arms and feet to those You would serve and touch.

Glorify the Father

Now there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast; these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip came and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." John 12:20-28

Even the Greeks wanted to see Jesus—to honor Him. They were in town for the Passover—and were obviously believers since were there to worship. This IS THE DAY for Jesus to be recognized as the Messiah. He doesn’t tell anyone to keep it quiet and not tell. Up until now, Jesus had kept telling His disciples and those that He healed, “don’t tell….” Don’t tell about the Transfiguration, the healing of the lepers, restoring the life of the synagogue official’s daughter after she had died, and He even told His disciples not to tell that He was the Christ (Matthew 16:20). So now His time had finally come…He knew that His death was eminent—and after that, His resurrection. That was what “His Time” was all about—the beginning of the end of His ministry. He knew that like a grain of wheat, He had to die so that because of His death—His sacrifice—the sins of many would be forgiven and they would live. Jesus taught His disciples that they needed to serve and follow Him. By doing that God the Father would honor them—but more importantly, the Father would be glorified. Glory be to the Father.

In the humanness of His soul, Jesus was troubled or anxious about what He knew He had to do—but He was still willing to do it—to be the ultimate sacrifice—in order to glorify the Father. How often do we face things we just don’t want to do…whether it is taking out the trash, visiting our neighbors, or tackling a difficult issue…we just have to do it. Our problems seem pretty minor compared with what Jesus was facing—crucifixion. Now is the time for us all—the time for us to share what Jesus has been doing in our lives—and how He can help others with their anxieties, problems and issues. Knowing Jesus doesn’t make us perfect or make our problems go away…but He promised that He will hear our prayers and that He will never leave or forsake us. When we believe in Jesus as our Savior, we become more than “friends” we become family. We are adopted into God’s family. We need to remember that God created everyone…but He adopted those who believe in His Son Jesus. It is good to be a part of the family of God. Are you?

Prayer ~Dear Jesus—we glorify You and Our Heavenly Father. We are thankful that You were obedient to Our Father by dying on the cross for our sins. Help us to be obedient to You.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

There are so many diets out there. So much food…so little time…and a moment on the lips—a lifetime on the hips. So what do we do and although Jesus ate whole grain breads, not everyone’s body digests, assimilates and utilized the whole grains of today. Then too…DIET is such an ugly word. I prefer eating plan or routine. I’m trying out a few recipes to add to my routine repertoire—as we all have favorites that we repeat time and again. New favorites that are particularly healthy are good. I’m considering the Paleo Diet since I have found that my body is just healthier—less arthritis pain and more energy—with a wheat-free or grain-free eating plan. I’m also reducing sugar, and restricting, if not totally eliminating, dairy products. This recipe today is a one I adapted from Paleo Cooking from Elana’s Pantry.

Twice Baked Acorn Squash

1 medium acorn squash – halved and seeded Olive oil

2 eggs

½ cup orange juice

2 Tbsp coconut oil, melted

¼ cup honey

1tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp nutmeg

¼ tsp ground ginger

¼ tsp sea salt

Brush a bit of olive oil on the squash and bake at 350 degrees F, cut side down, for about 50 minutes or until tender. Remove the skin and discard it. Puree the squash, eggs, orange juice, coconut oil, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt until very smooth. Pour into a 9” glass lightly greased, pie pan and bake again at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes, until lightly browned. Serve warm and enjoy.

A Guest in Your Home Today

Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. Luke 19:1-6

Yes, Jesus called Zacchaeus by name. Not "Hey you--up in the tree" or "Shorty." But Zacchaeus. He knew his name without any indication of being formally introduced prior to this. Jesus knows all things--names, places, events. He knew that He was going to Zacchaeus' home for dinner. And when Jesus announced that to Zacchaeus it made him very happy. Filled with joy. God wants us to be happy--to be blessed. He knows each of us by name...where we live...and He wants to be in our lives today. It feels good when someone calls you by name--and are a guest in their home...or they are a guest in your home.
Will you find room in your heart for Jesus--or the Holy Spirit--today? Is your life so busy that you only have a few minutes to give Him...while you read a couple of verses or pray for a your close family members or friends? If you can give Him 10% of the money you make--a tithe--can you give Him 10% of your time? Is that 10% of all your time in the day (24 hours) which would be 2.4 hours or 2 hours and 24 minutes or will you only give Him 10% of your 16 waking hours or 1 hour and 36 minutes? Can you study His Word and pray for that long each day? How earnestly are you seeking the Lord? Only in church...or with all of your heart and soul?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You are precious to me--I know Your name and feel so honored that You know me by name, too. May all that I think, say and do today bring honor to You...as You come into my heart and my home. Be my guest today and always. Like Zacchaeus, I am filled with joy.

Be Humble—Like a Child

About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?" Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, "I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me." Matthew 18:1-5

The sweet, sweet spirit of the Lord is upon the little children. They haven’t learned yet to sin. Oh sure, they can be selfish and covet what their sibling or friend has, but they are still innocent babes with only the original sin of Adam and Eve on them. Jesus recognized the purity in them, that innocence, their innate goodness and naivety. The children believed in Jesus and trusted Him—as only children can. That is exactly how Jesus wants everyone to come to Him—with heartfelt belief, trust and obedience.

Come as humble little children.

So Jesus is calling us to turn from our sin…to humbly allow our hearts to be transformed to have childlike attitudes—centering on goodness, kindness, gentleness and above all love. Can you do that? Come to Jesus, like a little child?

Prayer ~ Jesus, we know that You love us…like children. And although we see children fussing, crying, whining with selfish attitudes from nearly day one of their lives, we know that You see them as precious, humble little beings…and want all of us to come to You the way that they do, with humble hearts, accepting Your love, grace and mercy. We praise You for all that You do for us…and for Your love that covers all our sin.
