Get Up!

Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him. A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said. Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.” Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother. Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.” And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside. Luke 7:11-17

Meditate. Life and death. Death and life.

Don’t cry. Get up and live.

Nain is a village about twenty-five miles from Capernaum where Jesus had just healed the Roman officer’s servant. It was no coincidence that Jesus was at this village with His disciples. God always has a plan. This event definitely brought glory to God. This was the widow’s only son—who would take care of her now? Women had to be cared for by a male family member. Jesus had compassion on this widow. Listen to His words, “Don’t cry.” By this time His father, Joseph, was likely deceased, so He could probably see a similarity of the situation in this widow and His widowed mother. Luke writes that Jesus’ heart overflowed with compassion.

As the funeral procession went by, Jesus merely touched the coffin and spoke to the young man. “Get up.”  Those simple words changed that little family’s direction. Imagine how overjoyed that mother must have felt to have her beloved son alive and well!

What do we learn about Jesus from this passage? Compassionate. Powerful.

Prayer ~ Glory be to the Father. You are merciful and righteous, Jesus. Thank you for Your compassion, generosity, and Your willingness to serve others by raising this young man from the dead.

Verse of Salvation ~ For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death2 Corinthians 7:10

Happy Birthday, Rachel
