What is Wisdom?

Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart. Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people. Luke 2:51-52

Meditate. Consider obedience, wisdom, and growth.

“Welcome home, Jesus,” I heard all my friends call to me as I arrived back in Nazareth from the Passover Festival in Jerusalem. That was an awesome time. I was so eager to go there and listen to the religious teachers. It was even better than I expected. I loved hearing them deliberate and debate the scriptures—they even considered what I said. The week of the Passover celebration went by so fast—I actually lost track of time and didn’t leave with my family. My mother and father looked for me for three days before they found me in the Temple with the Rabbis discussing scripture. When we headed for home, I kept thinking about all that I had heard from the Temple teachers, all that I had been learning for years at my hometown Hebrew school.

Obedience to my earthly parents and to my Heavenly Father was so important. That was my daily goal. Obey. As I obeyed, I thought about the Torah and all the scripture I had studied at the Temple and at my Hebrew classes here in Nazareth. Putting those verses together gave me insight, understanding of God, and what was it…wisdom? What is wisdom? Wisdom is insight, discernment of good judgment, knowledge, or a combination of all of these and more.

Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:2-6

Solomon wrote an entire book about wisdom and his father, David, often wrote about wisdom in the book of Psalms.

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom. Praise him forever! Psalm 111:10

Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. Proverbs 4:7

Am I wise? I am gaining wisdom, day by day, as I am obedient to my Father, for whom I have the utmost respect. He is the foundation of true wisdom—the wisdom that I am gaining. One day, I’m sure I’ll share this gracious wisdom with a multitude of people, and hopefully, we will wisely praise the LORD God together.

Prayer – Lord God, please fill me with wisdom—and give me understanding that I can apply it to my life in ways that are pleasing to You.

Verse of Salvation ~ But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:24
