Thinking as I Head Home

The LORD has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything.  Psalm 103:19

Meditate. Ponder God’s qualities.

Dusty trail from Jerusalem.
Israel
As my family and I walked the long road back to Nazareth, my mind was still focused on the deliberations of the Rabbis at the Temple. It was such an exhilarating time—listening to the Rabbis debate and discuss Scripture passages. I was amazed as they were at the thoughts and answers I had about each of the Scriptures set before the group. There were so many discussions each day—but we still did not discuss all the books in our Bible. The Torah—the first five books that Moses had written—were of upmost importance to most of the Rabbis.

In the beginning… Genesis 1:1

The very first sentence…the beginning of all scripture. What was God like? Well—we couldn’t even pronounce His name—Yahweh. The Rabbis wanted to discuss God Himself. His attributes. His character. This was my very Father about whom they were speaking. I suggested several scripture passages, as other Rabbis also did. The list was extensive.

God is…

Holy - For I am the LORD your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy…. Leviticus 11:44

Sovereign - The LORD has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything.  Psalm 103:19

All-powerful – O Sovereign LORD! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you! Jeremiah 32:17

All-knowing – How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension! Psalm 147:5

Present everywhere (Omnipresent) - I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. Psalm 139:7-8

Faithful and loving - Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. Deuteronomy 7:9

Kind and merciful - How kind the LORD is! How good he is! So merciful, this God of ours! Psalm 116:5

Perfect Justice But the LORD reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne. He will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness. Psalm 9:7-8

Good Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Psalm 34:8

Immutable - I am the LORD, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed. Malachi 3:6

Wisdom  - Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power. - Daniel 2:20

Transcendent - Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O LORD, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. 1 Chronicles 29:11

The Rabbis debated and discussed all these qualities of God and more. It was encouraging. My God had an infinite number of qualities. As I trudged along the dusty road to Nazareth, I considered once again all those virtues. God, my Father, was truly magnificent and worthy of all the praise. He filled my thoughts and life as my family and I headed home to Nazareth from Jerusalem.

Prayer – Lord God, You are magnificent. I want to honor You in all that I think, say, and do.

Verse of Salvation ~ But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:24
