Kind and merciful

How kind the LORD is! How good he is! So merciful, this God of ours! Psalm 116:5

Meditate. Consider God’s mercy in scripture. Read God’s word and listen to what He is saying

How can we love God if we do not know Him? So, most people want to know who God is…and what He is like. As a young boy, I studied the Torah and intentionally memorized it, since the only copy of it in Nazareth was at our village synagogue. As young children, we were taught that God is loving, just as He declared to Moses after he smashed the Ten Commandments…before God rewrote them.

The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, "Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness." Exodus 34:6

The Israelites at Moses’ time were instructed to love God. We are to do the same.

Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:4-5

In the Tanakh, including the historical books of our Bible, David told his son Solomon to seek God, to know Him. God has a promise attached for those who love Him…and one for those who don’t.

So now, with God as our witness, and in the sight of all Israel—the LORD's assembly—I give you this charge. Be careful to obey all the commands of the LORD your God, so that you may continue to possess this good land and leave it to your children as a permanent inheritance. And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 1 Chronicles 28:8-9

There are many verses that tell us about God’s qualities. These are a couple verses I memorized that tell us about God’s mercy.

-        For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant he made with your ancestors.  Deuteronomy 4:31

-        The LORD your God will be merciful only if you listen to his voice and keep all his commands that I am giving you today, doing what pleases him. Deuteronomy 13:18

God will not abandon us. Will that always be true? He won’t destroy us…as long as there is no sin in us. I choose not to sin against God.

Prayer – Lord God, You are merciful and promised to never abandon us. But what about Jesus on the cross? He took on the sins of the world—He became sin, so He felt abandoned, forsaken by You, when He died on the cross. What a sacrifice He made! What a sacrifice You made in giving up Your only Son for the sins of all mankind. Thank you.

Verse of Salvation ~ For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-17
