Who Do You Want To Be Your Mentor…And Who Do You Want To Mentor?

Prayer – Lord, for years now I’ve been saying that everyone needs to be a mentor…and everyone needs to have a mentor. To facilitate others growth, we need to be growing ourselves. Help me to be a good mentor...and to humbly receive training and teaching from others. I don’t know everything—but I am willing to learn more…more about You.

You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. 2 Timothy 2:2

Meditate. Consider God’s guidance in scripture.

Jesus is the ultimate teacher—and is worthy of being honored. Who taught you that? Would you consider that person a teacher or a mentor? A mentor is considered a trusted advisor, or a teacher, counselor, guide, supporter, or just a wise person. I think relationships are involved in mentoring. You cannot really transfer knowledge in a personal and applicable way without growing closer to that person. Just like the disciples that followed Jesus and the Jewish scholars who follow their Rabbis, we need to follow in the footsteps of those who mentor us and those we mentor. Teaching, training, and applying those truths to our lives, thus honoring God. To me, that is the purpose of mentoring.

Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me. John 12:25-26

Mentoring can be in lots of different aspects, like in work situations, with hobbies and crafts, in sports, or just about anything. Spiritual mentoring—imparting knowledge of the Lord—is my goal with mentoring. Choose your mentor carefully. I was surprised one day many years ago when a lady in my church asked me to be her mentor! I hadn’t thought of that role in my life. I’d been her Sunday School teacher so it was an obvious transition. Then later I “mentored” a young Christian lady as she learned about Jesus Christ as her Savior. I led her through a Navigators Bible study, Deepening Your Roots, a course in personal discipleship to strengthen your walk with God. The study included scripture memorization, as well as daily Bible reading. It’s a good program.

We can’t just mentor ourselves—we need to train one another. The Amplified Bible considers this in Paul’s letter to the Colossians.

Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts [deciding and settling questions that arise]. To this peace indeed you were called as members in one body [of believers]. And be thankful [to God always]. Let the [spoken] word of Christ have its home within you [dwelling in your heart and mind—permeating every aspect of your being] as you teach [spiritual things] and admonish and train one another with all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:15-17 AMP

Admonish and train one another with all wisdom…. That is just how I view mentoring. Good question for today: Who Do You Want to Be Your Mentor…And Who Do You Want to Mentor?

Verse of Salvation ~ God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation. Hebrews 2:10
