Memory Verse of the Week ~
Seek
the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you
everything you need. Matthew 6:33

Read it in
context.
No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one
and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot
serve both God and money. That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday
life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't
life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They
don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds
them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your
worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing?
Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don't work or make
their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as
they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today
and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you
have so little faith? So don't worry about these things, saying, 'What will we
eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?' These things dominate the thoughts
of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek
the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything
you need. So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own
worries. Today's trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:24-34
Years ago I
learned the song, “Seek Ye First” that is taken from this scripture and I
wondered what these things that will
be added were, so I went back to the
Bible and looked at that. This passage is from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount when
He was giving his followers practical teaching on life. The verses before this
memory verse tell us that we just don’t have to worry about food or clothes.
The Lord will provide what we need. No worries. No anxiety. Do you have food in
your cupboards and refrigerator? How about clothes in your closet? Most people
have more than they need. That’s when we need to share. Give to others. In a
discussion about the final judgment Jesus taught about how we are to treat
others.
Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come,
you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the
creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you
gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was
naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in
prison, and you visited me.' Then these righteous ones will reply, 'Lord, when
did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to
drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing?
When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will
say, 'I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my
brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!' Matthew 25:34-40
My favorite
verse to quote to my grandkids when there is some little argument is the Golden
Rule. Treat others the way you want them to treat you. Do you really want
others to pull your hair, hit you, or break your crayons?
Do to others whatever you would like them to do to
you. Matthew 7:12
Seek God’s
ways. Live righteously. He has promised that He will provide everything you
need.
Prayer
~ Lord God, You are my shepherd; I have all that I need. You let me rest in
green meadows; You lead me beside peaceful streams. You renew my strength. You
guide me along right paths, bringing honor to Your name. Even when I walk through
the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod
and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the
presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup
overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue
me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever.
Psalm 23:1-6. Thank You, Lord, for Your promise, provision and protection.
