Show Us a Miraculous Sign

Advent Lectionary Readings:
Psalm 90
Isaiah 1:24-31
Luke 11:29-32

As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said, "This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah. What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God. The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen. The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but  you refuse to repent." Luke 11:29-32

Are we just like that generation of whom Jesus was referring…that “evil” group looking for a sign? Are we like the Ninevites who repented when they heard Jonah preaching? Or are we like the group of people who refused to listen to wisdom…the wisdom of Jesus? He was obviously the one “wiser” than Solomon—but how often is His wisdom ignored?

If someone asked you about Jesus—could you share His wisdom with them…without your Bible? Of course, most people have their Bible on their phone now…so we always have it with us. But to what scripture would you point others?
The Sermon on the Mount—Matthew 5-7.
            The Beatitudes
The Golden Rule – Treat Others the Way You Want to Be Treated
            The Lord’s Prayer
The Ten Commandments—Exodus 20.
Some Parable…like the Sower. Matthew 13:3-23
The wisdom of Jesus is interspersed throughout the Bible…look at Revelation 3:20. Jesus is waiting for a response from each of us.

The Torah - at a Synagogue in Israel.
Put the Word of God into practice.
The crowd was pressing in on Jesus—they wanted to get close to Him to hear what He had to say. Just before this passage…Jesus said to the crowd…
But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice. Luke 11:28
There it is. If you want to be blessed…put God’s word into practice. He ended this illustration with “Repent”—so that is His challenge of obedience to that crowd listening to Him…and to all who read His word. How are you at following His instruction? Repent. Put God’s word into practice. That is a daily challenge for me.

Prayer - Lord Jesus...Thank You for Your challenge, instruction, guidance, and for Your example of obedience.
