Remember…or Deliberately Forget?

Advent Lectionary Readings:
Psalm 90
Numbers 17:1-11
2 Peter 3:1-18

Morning Glories - Israel
I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles. Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, "What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created." They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God's righteousness. 2 Peter 3:2-13 (Key words underlined for emphasis.)

Remember. ..deliberately forget. What are we to “remember” and what has been “deliberately forgotten?” Remember…that the prophets foretold that Jesus is coming again. Deliberately forgotten… that God in His awesome power made everything and then He destroyed everything on earth…except Noah and his family and the animals in the ark. There is a promise that God will destroy everything—the heavens, the earth and all the ungodly people in the day of judgment. This will happen unexpectedly—but we have been warned. Note that it is only the ungodly who will be destroyed—so it is our choice if we want to live with God in His new heavens and new earth. The way to do that is simply to repent. That God’s plan—not my words—not Peter’s words. God does not anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.  Don’t choose to be ungodly. Don't scoff. This advent season is a good time to evaluate where we stand with the Lord. God is being patient for your sake.
The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, "The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!" The LORD is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the LORD. Lamentations 3:22-26
His mercy is fresh every morning…but when the time is up…judgment will happen and where will you be found? I’ll be going to find my new home in heaven—a world filled with God’s righteousness. I hope you will be there, too.

Prayer ~ Jesus…Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Psalm 90:14. I sing for joy…today, all through the Advent season…and forever because of Your love. Lord God, please do forgive us...as we forgive others. We are your people...don't remember our sin anymore--especially as we celebrate the birth of Your Son, Jesus, and await His return!
