Let the Dead Bury the Dead

Another of the disciples said to Him, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father." But Jesus said to him, "Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead." Matthew 8:21-22

There are 21 references to “follow Me” in the NASB translation of the Gospels. There are a couple of meanings to those words—and in this passage and most of the passages listed it just simply means to become His disciple. Otherwise it means to “come now.” Spiritually this is a call to draw followers to Him, too—to go along with His teachings. Those who choose not to live like Jesus are the “dead” that can take care of other “dead.” Why would anyone choose to be “dead?” Lots of reasons—pride, selfish ambition, misunderstandings, rejection by other family or church goers, …and the list goes on. Basically, it is a private issue between that person and God. You can respectfully try to help them see Jesus as the way, the truth, the life, and the only way to the Heavenly Father… Jesus said … "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John 14:6. But everyone has to choose for themselves—no one can make that decision for someone else.

RSVP: Jesus is calling and inviting those who hear Him to come to Him…to learn from Him. How will you respond to Him today?

Prayer ~Jesus, we choose to follow You. No dead weight holding us back from walking in Your ways…on Your path.
